I hate the phrase "Show, don't tell", but cooking series really needs to do this to portray the sense of taste to the readers, which is something Soma lacks. To begin with, it's not nearly descriptive enough with the foods. There are many times that they are just covered by mundane descriptions like "wow it's so sweet" "so sour" "so tender" "very aromatic" "refreshing" "strong flavour". Then your tasting sessions are all like this

>Panel 2: puffed up cheeks of taster
>Next page: Taster in some cosplay photo shoot
So...how does it taste like? I don't have a clue, but it's apparently very good because they went to a meat carnival.
It's the same deal with the special ingredients they keep throwing in. You can't tell how they are any better than the common ingredients, but you'll just have to accept that they're better because the chef says so and the tasters agree.
I also don't like how a bunch of these matches are determined by whichever has a stronger flavour, it seems ridiculous at times that I just wonder why don't they just serve everything raw if "strong flavour" has this much influence.

In comparison, Toriko does a much better job at showing taste even though all its ingredients are make-believe. Like if you are going to show how tender it is, actually focus on the food at the moment it is being bitten and snaps in elasticity. Show how smooth it is with descriptions like how it slid to the back of your tongue upon entering your mouth and had almost gotten swallowed by accident without even getting a single bite.
And then you have Yakitate Japan, which does a better job at showing how one ingredient is better than the other for the situation like actually showing a molecule diagram of water reacting to this flour vs that flour.
