Remember watching NGE all the way through for the first time and all of those loops Anno threw you through just so that you could understand what the fuck you just watched? You may now have some degree of understanding since then of what happened in Evangelion, and what can ever be expected from Evangelion. But now, Anno has thrown you one giant loop in the form of 3.33. So much has changed, and the world of Evangelion has changed so much in 14 years. The technology is so much different, characters had to buck up and move on from their roles from the days at Tokyo III, and the planet is barely recognizable anymore; you’re as bewildered as Shinji is now, and that’s what supposed to happen. Anything Anno throws at you now will feel like a surprise because you’ve lost all sense of where you are and where you thought you were going.
The first two films hinged on your familiarity of NGE, no longer addressing character traits you’ve become so close to understanding; only briefly touching on character points, like Asuka looking at her doll, or a glimpse of Misato’s experience during Second Impact, because you already know these characters, and these short moments are to establish that these are the same faces you know, going through the motions of NGE once again. Not only that, but they are evolving further, with Shinji having confidence, Rei coming out of her shell more, and Asuka cooking for Shinji instead. The first two films lulled you into a sense of security that, despite a few changes here and there, felt like it was still following NGE while still adding something more to it. Your own preconceptions of Evangelion got you, and the angle and perspective you’ve chosen to see it has now been changed, with your perception of Evangelion now being rebuilt.

The first series seemed to end inside Shinji's head, as he became Goo and was trying to connect with a shared mind Goo, where everyone in the world seemed to be. Then he seemed to reimagine a new world. So is this all just a Puddle of Goo reimagining the world over and over... for what purpose?

Nah, Asuka is still piloting unit 02 despite all of the the near-irreparable damage it has been through for a very clear reason. It really is the only Eva she can pilot, even with her newfound angel abilities.
Shinji can only apparently pilot and awakening evas that were once the four Adams. Unit 1 and Eva 13 are two of those Adams. The same may apply to Kaworu as well, who we've only seen piloting eva 13 and Mark 6 (also a confirmed Adam) so far.
On the other hand, Mari, Rei and Rei Q are complete enigmas. Tumblr shitters ruin every anime they touch. The worst thing is that we let them in with open arms. At the start we were desperate for translations, so then they came along and offered to help with the translation project. Also, I figured that the reason they didn't tell him was that they were afraid of how he would react. To them, he's a ticking time bomb that could end the world at any moment. To Misato, he's representative of the losses she's suffered, while he's also still Shinji. They want him to stay out of an Eva, as they're afraid it could cause another Impact and end humanity.
I can understand that they must be feeling a wide range of emotions. The way 3.33 played it, it seemed that bringing him back was an unwanted consequence of retrieving Unit-01 as a battery. So Misato puts the Angel-Sealing choker on him just in case he does anything rash, but she can't bring herself to kill Shinji.
Look at what Kaworu and Fuyutsuki told him, and see how he reacted there. As soon as he was told that there was a method to undo what he did, he jumped at it and wouldn't even listen to Kaworu when he was telling Shinji to stop. Telling him the entire truth is the last thing they should have done.

With things like translating the actual movie or some of the interviews, it makes sense to take in all the help we can to get those translated since they're certainly not going to translate themselves. Misato wants to keep him alive out of maternal instinct, but doesn't want him to continue impact so gives him an explosive collar that will kill him if his eva goes berserk, and keeps him out of unit 01. Shinji has no idea what's going on because Misato is busy and hasn't taken the time to explain everything to him. He is irrelevant to the current battle: Misato is distant from Shinji like his father is now, because he's no longer a major part of her plan and things have gotten a lot more bleak since the previous movie.
Curse of the Eva: LCL is a primodial fluid of life, so sync'ing with an Eva causes one's body to not age.
The new Rei shows up and grabs Shinji, he escapes because Misato is reluctant to kill him.

Everyone keeps sticking to LCL even though there is a much better explanation: Plug depth. If it were LCL, everyone would've just been bathing in it. Kaworu: SEELE agent, initial motives unclear but befriends Shinji and promises to help him. Is Adam incarnate, but is also the Thirteenth Angel because SEELE wants him to initiate Fourth Impact.
Goes with Shinji using Eva 13, whose AT fields are spread from flying defense pods rather than from the hull proper for some reason. Followed by Rei in an Eva that contains another part of the soul of Adam and is one big surpressed angel core.
Shinji no longer recognizes blank Rei as the real Rei, causing her to question who she is. She questions this further when she finds out that Lilith's corpse is a giant naked rei. Kaworu mentions how the current Rei is artificial and has a misplaced soul. Mari also talks about how she basically was one of the first clones made and is flawed, hence her slow personality development.
The descend into Central Dogma to remove the lances to undo Third Impact, but the lances have reset to both being Longinus(angel deactivation) lances, rather than a Longinus and a Cassius. Shinji tries to remove them both anyway, Asuka and Mari try to stop him, he removes them. GNR explodes into LCL revealing Kaworu's old eva's wreck. Out of Kaworu's eva's wreck springs an angel which Kaworu and Shinji fight. This is the twelfth angel, meaning that once it is destroyed Kaworu's true power will awaken because of the order of angels written in the dead sea scrolls. Shinji tries to undo third impact but instead continues it and achieves a divine form, because he removed two longinus spears re-activating lilith's corpse and the pieces of third impact. Wunder shows up to try to stop him, gets attacked by Rei but she starts to develop her personality again, ejects so that Asuka can safely destroy her regenerating Eva.

Kaworu impales Eva 13 with the spears to stop the impact, because he realizes he's been manipulated by SEELE: his angel powers are being used to make him the thirteenth angel, to make him a threat to mankind that will initiate instrumentality. It's all according to keikaku. So he impales himself and allows his choker to trigger so he dies. Then Mari pulls Shinji's entry plug out so the impact will stop.
But this is actually all according to Gendo's keikaku, he wanted SEELE to lose at the last moment and had also shut down all the computers that SEELE's members had transferred their souls into. He wants an impact, but an impact where he can re-unite with Yui.
Then the pilots go to "where the Lilim are", presumably to re-unite with Wunder.
So basically, it can be figured out. 3.33 is not an indecipherable puzzle, though it is confusing, but 3+1 will hopefully resolve the more confusing parts of it.
Basically things work slightly differently than in the original NGE tv show but you can still figure out whats going on. There's specific emphasis on the fact that the angels have to work in a specific order, to have the power to cause an impact: Kaworu doesn't have the clearance to cause an impact until the angel before him(the glowing smoke wisp thing) is destroyed.
Also everyone's favorite character is ruined but hopefully 3+1 will fix this.

My current assumption is that this "Gaia" either has a strong association with Lilith, that weird angel fetus thing that was eaten by Eva 13, or both. Gaia appears to be directly connected to all lilin, acting as an evolutionary medium for humanity so that they can manifest both fruits of life and knowledge and ascend as a new race of superior life forms. These are what the failures of infinity were supposed to be, but the process was either halted or went completely haywire during the time skip.
I also liked the theory that none of the kids were human from the start of the rebuild.
Time loop shenanagans made Asuka, Mari, and Shinji into something else because they were the only ones not tanged when it happened.

I just don't see any reason to believe in LCL when we're given Plug Depth, which is always paired with people yelling and making a big deal out of how it's SUCH A BAD THING that they're increasing their plug depth. Curse of Eva being the direct result of going in too deep makes far more sense than "Whoops, you bathed in the LCL a little too long, now you're immortal!"
