Are there really people who like the *monogatari anime for more than just shitty fanservice? Seems like just a harem show filled with otaku pandering dialogue and character interactions, animated by one of the laziest studios, and directed in the most irritating way possible only to be passed off as "deep" in what I can only assume is some sort of joke.
Plus the "everything's flattened" and "random flashes of color and text" may somewhat fit Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, but it is not an all-around solution for every show. Trust me, I thought the same. Everyone on /a/ told me it was great, and it's someone I know IRL's favourite anime. Then I finally gave it a go and it was bottom of the barrel, lowest common denominator shounen garbage after all. It's probably one of the worst anime I've had the displeasure of trying. Nothing of note happens in the first 10 episodes, and that's a clear sign of shitty writing and development. Once you realize that everything you see in the series is warped to fit the MC's state of mind you'll see that the direction is pretty fucking clever.
We tend to hate it because
1)The fanbase - A large portion of them are everything the world thinks of stereotypically as an anime fan.
2)The threads - They create a bunched of forced threads on the same topic at once, then freak out when they get saged or trolled even a little and create a dozen more.
3)The artwork - Over the years a mangaka's artstyle changes, most people accept that, but Naruto's gets worse and worse as time goes on, at this point most people don't even use the "style" argument to defend it, it's just getting bad.
4)The characters - It's full of annoying uneeded characters who never get any real development. In fact, the main characters don't either, instead of developing them, they add a new one. And female characters are underused and mostly ignored.
Do I need to go on? There's a lot more. Naruto is pretty bad in my opinion but the point is that people some enjoyment out of it usually try to claim it's high tier manga, come to /a/ and make stupid troll threads thinking it's /b/ 2.0 from the get-go and try to force it down everyone's throats.

The plot frequently goes on stupid tangents with characters we don't care about. Naruto himself is a MORON so hard that it hurts. Look at the current arc. Okay, he's learning to control the Kyuubi. He thinks he's on a mission to study the animals on an island that he doesn't know is a giant turtle. He believes Yamato is just outside, he's oblivious to the fact that there is a WAR BEING WAGED RIGHT OUTSIDE. Oh, and Kabuto ate Orochimaru, and is bringing EVERYBODY WHO EVER DIED BACK TO LIFE AS ZOMBIES to fight in the war. Well thought-out plots my ass.
This really is the shittiest arc in a series filled that is known for its shit arcs. Rehashed deaths everywhere, ruining the original deaths of Haku and Zabuza, more zombie shenanigans, a good dose of melodrama, and unintelligent fighting that prove the writer didn't learn anything from his past failures.

Kishimoto ruins every character when he gives them enough spotlight. Wishing for Shikamaru and Rock Lee to become main character is simply wishing for Kishimoto's writing to make them into huge faggots.
The entire secondary cast in Naruto is terribly (un)developed. Kakashi, Sakura (lolnoparentsorbackstory), Hinata, Shikamaru, Neji, Shino, Swordsmen of the Mist, etc. had decent characterization at first, but terrible development all around. Other shounen can do it quite well - I don't want to see these characters in the spotlight all the time, but every somewhat relevant character, good or evil, must have a reasonable motivation and a minimal amount of time to shine. Which isn't the case in Naruto at all.
Not to mention characters in Naruto seem to have the most fucking retarded motivations of all. Sasuke wants to kill his brother, finds out his brother died for the village, then decides he hates the village? It's as if Kishimoto actually can't think of anything else for him to do other than seek revenge, so now he's not even bothering to justify it. The main character is hopelessly overpowered with regards to the rest of the cast (who aren't deemed worthy of screentime anymore, despite being many many times better than the main characters in terms of both design and personality). Humour is terrible, but this wouldn't be such a bad thing if it wasn't obvious Kishimoto thinks himself amazing at it and insists on attempting jokes about girls becoming irritated when they are told they have small tits.

Naruto is really never crawling out from the abyss of shit itself created. In the last 2 years the "story" went WAY past the point-of-no-return, as the last 100 or so chapters easily qualify for some some of the worst written manga ever to be commited.

I read up to the end of the Yorknew arc and it's a 4/10 at best, at least up to that point.Everything before Yorknew was generic and mediocre, except Zoldyck Family which was 5 chapters of irredeemable shit, but Yorknew itself would actually have been pretty good if the pacing wasn't so shit. the manga didn't survive past the timeskip. doing a timeskip is a huge risk for all mangas/animes, because the characters personality is suposed to change yet to not change and retain the original flavour. which might not be as an appealing of a story.
sasuke for example looks like he did a reverse timeskip.
the way he faced things in first naruto and as a kid, bitter but without the DARKNESS faggatory, was much better.
also it became a series of naruto going "hey sasuke let's do a lovers suicide"
enventually even kishimoto wanted to drop the manga but couldn't due to the weird fanbase the post time skip manga atracted, and now stuck to give continuity to a manga that even he clearly hates.
The JoJo TV show is utter garbage compared to the OVA.
The OVA had much better art and even the pacing was better (ie half the fights aren't someone doing exposition)

No, you cant have the juxtaposition of a character that wants peace in a PEACEFUL setting, because that's just fucking stupid! Naruto hasnt experienced real pain of war, or bickering nations.
His idealism is disgusting, because it's not actually interacted with the real world, only pathetic super idealized 'figurehead villains and orders' that he can fight againts. When you have a brightly shining villain to fight againts, SURE, it's fucking easy to want peace, but what happens when the war is over. And nations return to fighting, and bickering, and stealing, and murdering each other, and making ninjas fight each other for fun or profit?

The 2011 version of the anime is indeed 8/10 up to the end of the Yorknew arc, and from there it keeps getting better or at least it maintains that level of quality.
