Well, at least I get to spend less money that way.

>>118619568
Unless there is some sort of online DRM, yes you DO.

It means that for example if you want to use a crack to get rid of disk-swapping you effectively lose the right to play the game.
Sure, nobody's going to notice. But if we are going to be illegal we may just as well pirate the game and skip the CD.

>I don't care if I don't "own" Mario

Japanese actually PAY to go to Monster Hunter meetups and play LOCAL multiplayer with each other. There are strict rules against exchanging friend information with one another at these meets and playing with them online. You will get kicked out and blacklisted if they find you doing this.

Wanna play local multiplayer on Monster Hunter without one of these meets? Good luck, nobody will fucking play multiplayer outside of these public social meetups, even if you're just on the train or something and start up a multiplayer room. If you see someone with a multiplayer room open on the train and try joining, chances are you'll get kicked because they're playing with a friend they actually know and not you.

Pokemon is kind of an exception to this rule, for whatever reason. People battle and trade with randoms all the fucking time, and you'll get streetpasses like fucking wildstorm over there.

That's online DRM. For that you need an internet connection. So you're not just missing the right to resell, but.. here it comes: ownership. Since you see, you have to ask for permission just for installing, if not even just playing as well.
Try to follow just a little.

Hes right. At no point do you ever own the contents of the game. The data is never yours. You're buying the right to use the data. The fact that you do so through a disc transfer is a semantic.

>>118620561
>Hes right. At no point do you ever own the contents of the game. The data is never yours
That was never denied. What is said is that as long as you can't use it without physical restrictions (like a required internet connection), you own the the damn thing, because you can do what the hell you want with it, including it's main function which is playing it. You can sell it to someone else and he'll have just the same abilities. That's ownership. The ownership over the data has absolutely no relevance in that equation since the only time it would matter was if you were to copy the data for use in your personal commercial project.
>>
>>118620693

Not him, but you are clearly a manchild if you think boxed releases are a good thing. They prove nothing and are essentially a waste of space. They are obsolete, the only reason japs still get them is because their culture has problems keeping up with the technology, refusing to let go of the past. Just look at how fax machine is still used there.
>>
>>118620760
No seriously, you should stop this shit.
Here are facts for mister I can't get over my very own semantics.

1. I have cd
2. I use cd to play
no hindrance so far. I own the game (hurr durr you don't own mario because u not nintendo).
3. I sell the game
4. I can't play the game, I transferred ownership alonside the cd.
5. can't play the game because I don't own it anymore.

Find a rebuttal to that, faggot.

what the fuck happened to the thread
>>
Do you not realize restrictions can be placed on a disc just like they can be placed on any piece of data transferred over the internet.

How old are you? Do you not know what serial keys are? Do you think DRM was invented in the last decade?
>>
>>118620881
Are you actually shitting on fax machines? Let's see you come up with a more effective way to transfer physical documents over great distances.
>>
>>118620911
It turned into /v/ is what happened.
>>
>>118621018
Those are timeless. They don't require an internet connection at any moment.
I'll take the days old serials anytime over that digital trash.
>>
>>118620896
Take for contrast this.
1. I have CD
2. I use CD to play
3. I lose CD
4. I continue playing the game because my right to play is still being acknowledged
5. I wipe my hard drive
6. No problem, just download legally and continue playing

Seems to me that I have more ownership over the actual game than you. You have the right to sell it (and you wouldn't if they had been able to think of a way to stop you sooner), but I can actually play the game independently of the CD.
Regardless, neither of these two instances are actual, legal ownership.
For all practical purposes, having it registered online is better because it's unlikely that giants like steam will stop working before your CD does, unless you put your CD into a safe because you don't actually want to play the game.
In which case, why bother?
>>
>>118621131
>turned into /v/
It was /v/ from the OP.
>>
>>118621155
You haven't made an argument as to how thats superior to digital DRM in any way. Its all the same thing predicated on the same absolute legal truths. You're just getting worked up because "muh box".

Well, I don't need an internet connection. I don't need to go ask for the permission to use it to anyone at anytime. But you're free to deny this. You're the one servile idiot here, I just warned you.
>>
>buying games in any form

It's less of a hassle to pirate and it's free.

The only time I have to deal with Steam is when people buy me games as gifts (I have maybe like 5-10 games on Steam)
>>
>>118621344
Actually I just pirate it and store it on an external because i'm better than you at something I apparently care far less about. I don't even have to pay the initial price for the thing.

Honestly, buyfags getting upset and throwing hissy fits about the hoops you have to jump through are hilarious.

DRM has always been restrictive and has always been present. You just want some hideous box with shitty screenshots on the back with quotes from some playtesters with some stupid code you have to enter for some reason thats beyond me.
>>
>>118621344
Instead you rely on your little heap of required passwords and aging CDs.
You have an internet connection anyway.

>I don't need to go ask for the permission
Semantics. Entering a 30 digit password on your computer is barely different from logging in on steam, other than requiring an internet connection.

But you will have little difficulty downloading a game.

Nothing lasts forever.

All things are impermanent.
>>
>>118621726
>We've been over this.
>steam will never die!

Yeah, we totally went over that concern. Publishers never die, digital games bought on PS3 won't have to be bought again when the PS5 will be out, etc. Absolutely no problem here.
>>
>>118622172
>>steam will never die!
Nice strawman. I never said that.

A little more than a decade ago, I bought Baldur's Gate 1. Then I bought it again, because one particular disk broke. And yet again, because this stupid disk was way overused for the game. (disk 3, I believe?)
In total, I have purchased some 4 versions of BG1 over the course of just 2 years. Two of which illegally, admittedly, so maybe those sets was simply more prone to failure.
How old is Steam now?
>>
>>118622401
11 years. Of shitting over PC gaming. Valve single-handedly enabled online DRM and DLC abuses on PC. before half life 2 it was marginal at best, but valve had to take counter strike hostage to build itself an armour of cocksuckers.
Where were you when it all started?
