They foreshadowed that Unohana was stronger than she let on, which had nothing to do with Zaraki at the time; and that Zaraki had a backstory yet to be elaborated on, which had nothing to do with Unohana at the time. Tying two loose ends together after the fact is not the same as having planned for them to merge when they were individually introduced. I feel like Kubo has just sectioned it off. He still seems to love it he just doesn't let it run rampant across the whole manga. He clumps all the gore and weirdness around distinctly weird characters, almost like it lets him excuse the gore and weirdness by doing so. Mayuri, Aaroniero, Zomarri, Szayelaporro, Quilge, As Nodt, Super Star, Pepe, etc... because when he's not being gross and weird he defaults to generic same faced attractive characters, the cold broody pretty guy, the wild rough around the edges guy, the spunky loli, the ditzy titty monster, and so on. Powerlevels are obviously based on ranks of "coolness." If Kubo can't think of a cool way to kill a villain then the hero just gets bailed out, offs them off screen, or gets a lame unimpressive and narrowly won victory. It's why Shuuhei and Ikkaku and Shinji and the Vizard never win any fights now. Kubo blew his load with most of them during the Aizen thing and with no cool scenes left to give them they just don't ever win.

Back when it seemed like Aizen had only started making his own Arrancar and sticking them in neat white uniforms since he left SS it felt like he was making them just to test out the hougyoku and get the hang of it before using it on himself, or Gin or Tousen. I always liked the idea that he never meant to raise an army of arrancar, he just kept piling up test subjects and needed to give them something to do. It kinda lent to his god complex to think he didn't even want them as pawns, he was just stuck making use of them so long as he was stuck with them.
