I prefer the show. SHAFT stuck to the source material fairly well, but the changes they did were for the better. For example, in the anime it's much easier to see why Araragi and Hitagi stick together. Hitagi's characterization overall is better in the anime.

I think it's a case where it's not really a matter of one being better. The anime is good adaptation of something not straightforward to adapt. Inevitably it can't convey everything that's in the books, but makes use of the new medium to add a lot.

I started reading it and I was like meh, I don't really care that much about these dummasses. Okitegami seems alright though, it's like a light zaregoto, weird ass researchers, secret societies, an apathetic male protagonist and a female protagonist with brain problems both in their twenties, closed room mysteries, only noone's getting killed at least so far.
