The Tokyopop version is a rewrite by an American comic author. It's still good though, all things considered.
The movie was overrated.
The novel was published in English and then published again relatively recently with a new translation.
The sequel stuff is blah.

A few things:
The manga's translation was butchered badly. It is way edgier than the original work was and added stupid shit that didn't even exist in the original script.
Tokyopop hired a comic book writer to "adapt" what was basically word-for-word from the original book, which you can of course buy in unbutchered English book form. That is why Koushin Takami gets writer credit for the manga.
The only reason I buyfagged this series was because there were no scans and I wanted to see Sugimura fight Kiriyama. I was always butthurt movie-Sugimura went down like a bitch.

/a/ is stupid OP. The manga for this is amazing. It's the first manga I ever read that made me feel emotional and sad. Granted I discovered it in 10th grade, but still. Even with english script criticisms, that art is god tier enough to make up for it.Unless anyone could recommend better gore art with a better story.

I would have liked this much more if:
1- everyone didn't have silly faces. I still don't get how the artist can be so good at everything but faces.
2- Kiriyama was nerfed to have less ammo and didn't have that horrible "oh god I got shot in the brain better do ridiculous poses while I have a flashback" in the end
3- the manga translation wasn't completely butchered
4- it wasn't so edgy
