>>
>>117454939
I haven't really watched anime regularly in over a decade, and don't much care anymore. But fuck, this travesty put tears in my eyes. Just why? Why does Kajishima insist on making all these shows and just spew an explosive stream of diarreah all over every character that made the original unique? How can someone hate their greatest creation with such a burning passion?

Posting an OVA is kind of cheating. You can get movie-level attention to detail with TV-level practicality of execution. It's best of both worlds.
>>
>>117455166
It's not cheating, considering the 90s had a very high output of OVAs, and the quality of OVAs was much higher back then compared to now.
OVAs now just tend to be more of the same TV quality shit.
>>
they just don't make moe like the used to
>>
>>117455209
The OVA market was a fantastic place for animators and studios to do something unique or experimental or just tell their story without concern for censors and not have to invest the money for a theatrical release.
Nowadays, OVAs are treated as a cheap cash-in on a TV show's popularity where they get to be a little extra ecchi and a actually show nipples without shitty censoring techniques since you're already buying the disc(in theory) to see it.
I just hope something changes in Japan's anime distribution model to allow for more OVA production. Especially taking advantage of digital distribution methods. Just SOMETHING to make OVAs profitable as standalone enterprises so we can get back to that way of giving directors and studios a chance to do something experimental.
>>
>>117455209
What happened to OVAs anyway? There's barely been any original content on that front for years. Most of it seems to be continuations of TV shows.
>>
>>117454823
Ai Tenchi isn't Kajishima's fault.
>>
>>117455452
>What happened to OVAs anyway?

They became late night TV anime.
>>
>>117455432
I gave up on anime completely about a decade ago. I was more of a fan in the 90s, and there's really not anything left for me. It's one of my favorite mediums, and it's chock full of potential, but it just veered off in the wrong direction in the early 2000s. All the experimental or moderately interesting stuff just disappeared, and it started to pander solely to otaku. There was certainly otaku pandering back in the 90s as well, but it was different, and filled with in-jokes and its own culture. Today it's just mass consumerism aimed at the worst losers of society.
>>
Kei is my waifu
>>
>>117455550
Nah, he just owns the fucking franchise.

Anyway, why the fuck would they make a new Tenchi and mostly leave out the original cast? Why leave out the very thing that made it stand out and make it unique?
I mean, they really want to focus on Tenchi, the most generic, dull character in the show, along with a bunch of random anime chicks?

I just can't fathom the logic behind it. People watched the show for the girls, because they were interesting, well written and well designed. Tenchi was just a catalyst for them to react to.

First of all, I did live in the golden age of anime.
Second, what kind of adult goes on a tantrum like an autistic child, because someone else grows out of anime?
Third, ellipses are used properly to convey trailing off, which is different from simply adding it to every sentence.

Grow up.

They're not truly the cancer killing anime right now either. Although the reliance on archetypes in order to sell figures to otaku is irritating as fuck.

But the truth is that it's an industry with very limited appeal. What's worse is that there's about thirty shows being pumped out each season which causes a lot of saturation.

Yeah, that was part of the charm. Also, lower availability, also increases the enjoyment of things.
Now that every form of entertainment is immediately available through the internet, you get burned out quickly, and each individual thing isn't as good as it was in the past.
I've virtually burned out on most forms of entertainment, because I've just consumed too much of it over the past decades. TV shows, movies, games... I can go weeks and months without touching any of it, because I've seen every fucking clichè and stereotype before.

At least it leaves me with more time to pursue other hobbies that are far more creative.

Well, I'm really close to that. I've devoured so much fiction of every kind in the years that everything that doesn't have actually something fresh inside is absolutely boring. the reason I'm still into animation is, I admire skill, and that luckily it never disappears completely from this medium, be it direction, animation or design. these guys aren't like shitty hollywood or fox tv "artists", these are demure, autistic people that work themselves obsessively to perfect their professional techniques. well often. and its art, artisan art, still great even if made just to make money out of profitable 40 years old virgins.

It might be different from Hollywood, but the only difference is that they rely on other stereotypes and clichés.
The primary reason I don't enjoy anime, aside from the severe drop in art direction and skill, is the fact that every character and story element is the same, down to the intonation of a character's voice. I've seen it all before.
And I don't even know why they do this. They don't have to rely on predictable writing, when you literally have the freedom to do anything.

I've actually started to wonder how far the level of anime infiltration goes in Japanese society. Even when it's not anime itself, many aspects of the otaku culture itself seems to persist, such as idols and girl bands, along with the extremely superficial pop culture and pandering to losers.

Of course, this is all seen from an outsider who hasn't actually been to Japan yet, so I might be totally off base.

I'd say that today's otaku cultures are more of a stand alone complex, attempting to copy an original that never really existed.
>>117462703
Somebody thought of the children.
>>
>>117462508
I'd say the genuine otaku culture lasted until the late 90s, which was roughly when I became an anime fan.
My first real anime was Akira back in 1994, though, when they aired it uncensored on TV for some reason. The channel promoted the hell out of it, and even sent a documentary and wrote an article on Akira and Japanese anime.
Fuck me, it was amazing to watch as a kid. It just opened up a new world.
I don't think modern kids will ever get this, as they're spoonfed every form of entertainment from they're born.
>>
>>117457146
Though stuff, I almost gave up on anime because I like plenty of late 90s-early 00s series, OVAs and music, and many of the people who liked those are mostly near their 30s, and by that time people change, ofteng moving on. Older anime discussion isn't as easy as retro game discussion, and even harder for those younger than the original fags.

True, but they will get something else. maybe not this generation, maybe not the next, but sooner or later it will happen again its the human nature that dictates this.
someone, somewhere, someway will go farther and break out, and people like him, the minority that doesn't feel at home with the majority, will follow. RULES OF NATURE etc.
>>
>>117462758
Passing 30 is a shitty experience. Not because you feel old, but because there's a new generation of little shits behind you who now dictate popular culture, and unless you're a manchild, it likely doesn't fit your taste. You really just lose the ability to connect with new people, and the ones your age usually move on, or focus on specific hobbies, rather than the generalized shit that young people like.

I was too old for the Pokemon generation, but remember how fucking obnoxious it was when all the kids were shitting their pants over that retarded show. It's very strange for me to see a whole generation of people in their 20s obsessing over kiddie stuff like that, no matter what excuses they make about how mature they think it is.

This. The Yu-Gi-Oh threads are kind of surprising to me, considering its aimed at kids in the 8-14 age range. I was wondering how many are watching it just for nostalgia.

Sometimes I feel like I don't belong on /a/, because I usually only find 2 or 3 shows a season anymore than I enjoy and complete. I've gotten much more picky on what I watch now. Its the same thing for games.

>>
>>117463000
I'm exactly like you, even older, but I'm always on the edge of the new shit. your problem is that you didn't grew out the most important thing: your tastes. why you care about popular culture? just watch how it goes and take what you makes you curious. if its shit you still have the old things. why you don't connect with younger people? they are full of things you don't get, and you can give them a lot of unknown stuff. and if they're too young just leave them be.
>>117463164
>I've gotten much more picky
well that's just normal. everyone did this growing up, even when things were slower or with other media that changed at lower speeds, like western comics
>>
>tfw you can't tell fellow nerds how much you like retro anime and 80s/90s stuff in general because of that "born in le wrong generation" meme.

Know what's worse than being a thirty-something otaku fag whose interests have become a niche over the years? Being a twenty-something nerd with the same tastes. Everybody thinks I'm a hipster who only pretends to have a hard-on for that shit, or dismisses me for not having more current tastes.

I still like some of the art, and I've been drawing the shit for 14 years now, despite not having been an anime fan for almost a decade. It's a very odd position to be in, drawing stuff for people you don't share a fandom with. I suppose I should move on, but I'm stuck in my ways.

I'm highly cynical. I don't know if it's because I'm picky, have specific tastes, have become more mature or if I'm simply a jaded asshole. It's probably a little bit of each.

There's very little in popular culture I enjoy. I try new things, but they don't sit well with me. I don't connect with young people, because I see the same types I knew growing up, or I see my previous self. This includes all the ignorance and false beliefs young people have, and these tend to repeat themselves in certain age groups, no matter what the cultural landscape is. That being said, I do have some younger friends, but I usually just nod and smile when they talk about how awesome something is. I don't think they'd like lectures about what they like is superficial shit, and no one likes a cynical asshole.

Anyway, I focus more on fitness, hiking, engineering, robotics, drawing, brewing beer or just spending free time outside with friends or in my boat.

>>
>>117463682
I have kinda the impression that you're kinda a rich guy with no drive. you do all these things, and call yourself jaded asshole? or even better, you call yourself jaded asshole in a discussion abut entertainment? I've become a jaded asshole because i feel no more pity for weak or victimized people, not because I get bored by drinking beer on my boat.
you say you keep seeing the same types of people, but its true that what we see of the people around us depends also on how they perceive them. at this point I don't know what to say, apart that expecting excitement from trite mass culture is one of the naivest things a grown man could expect, except if he uses it as padding from everything that's empty in his life. try taking a trip in the emerald city, maybe the wizard can give you a spare heart.
>>
I wish there was an anime that started out as a millenial harem "comedy" with a bland-ass protagonist who has the proportions of a ten year old, an abusive tsundere loli and the usual moeblob cast; and slowly turns into an 80s action show, with the MC becoming a muscular badass with big eyebrows, and the girls becoming fluffy-haired action babes who aren't dumb sluts and have noses.
>>
>>117463719
Wasn't much money to be made. It was all very communal, sharing that shit because you could. It was slightly before my time, but I did trade VHS stuff with some Germans and Swedes.
Also watched most of Evangelion on some shitty vivo streaming format that disappeared from the face of the earth after a few years. The format was so shitty, you couldn't even skip ahead. If you tried, it just started from the beginning. Then DSL became common, I got access to an FTP with massive amount of content and I came continuously for a year, before my interest started to die down.

>I've become a jaded asshole because i feel no more pity for weak or victimized people

We're talking about entertainment, so I'm talking about being a jaded asshole in relation to entertainment. It was a huge part of my life until my mid-20s.

I'm also jaded as far as society in general is concerned and most of my views are very far from acceptable, so I tend to keep them to myself. I wouldn't say it's so bad that I don't feel pity for people who are victimized. It's more along the lines that I feel society in general has far too much empathy for people who don't deserve it. But do you really want to get into a political discussion on /a/? You know how that shit turns out.

As for the things I do, I seem to do them to fill a void. I do genuinely enjoy them, but there's always that empty feeling in the back of my head that's something's missing. I assume a lot of people have this. Constant stress also makes me feel like I'm stretched too thin.

But how about that anime!
