The problem with not giving any subtlety to your villains is that it takes away any surprise or doubt from the plot. When Shinji claimed that he wasn’t responsible for Rider attacking that student, I laughed. Yeah, of course Mr. One-dimensional asshole didn’t hurt anyone! He’s completely harmless! I’ve mentioned before that one-dimensional villains don’t work as characters, and they work equally poorly as plot devices. You know it’s a bad idea for Shirou to ally with him (even Shirou knew that much), and you know he’s gonna do something awful with his bounded field. There’s no unpredictability. There’s no excitement. There’s just Shinji trying to earn street credit with his friends in the society of sociopaths.
Caster was a similarly poor villain. I know from watching the old FSN that she wants the grail. I also know that her master’s not evil. So why make her come off as such an asshole? Why make her tell Shirou that she enjoys it when she struggles? Can we not side with Shirou if the people he’s opposing might have okay reasons to get the grail? But hey, Caster did provide a thought-provoking moment in this conversation. When she needlessly explained her tactics to Shirou, it made me think about why I was watching this and not a Saturday morning cartoon.
And just a quick question: What’s the point of establishing that Caster made a bounded field if both Saber and Archer aren’t going to have any trouble getting through? It seemed like a wasted plot point to me.
