It was the other way around for me (you might need to watch Hitagi End to understand why, though). She was just a shitty generic shy moeblob who wanted the MCs dick and there was nothing interesting about her as a character compared to the other girls.
SS is what revealed her true colors / the type of person she really was and thatit was all an act; it gave her a lot of character development and depth that she severely lacked before that. Granted, she's still a shit, but I liked her a little more after the arcs involving her in SS.

What'd you not like about ef? The character designs and some of the music didn't really age too well (and I hated Chihiro's voice), but the rest of it is great.

The animation in it actually pretty poor. All the overhead shots have butchered perspective and at point in the end they had a ridiculous stretched ellipse of the moon.
The arc with Hiro was fine but Renji's arc was pretty weak, and I felt the VA's kinda sucked.
Overall it was alright/10 but not really great.

I think they've done pretty well, considering it's kinda hard to imagine it done by another studio.
I mean, imagine it done by trigger in the style of kill la kill or TTGL. It's just too weird.
They really had to go abstract with it to make it work, but they did it well. It's the kinda thing that works as long as you don't think about what is actually happening too hard. If you start questioning why there's a room full of books or a bathroom the size of most houses it gets kinda weird, but such is life in shaftland.
Also, I'm really fond of Araragi's design, since there wasn't much to go on from the novels for that.

There are other studios that have handled the "SHAFT style" really well. I'm watching Tasogare Otome x Amnesia right now and it's one of the SHAFT-iest anime I've ever seen, so I was pretty surprised when I found out it wasn't them.
That being said, the distinctive style SHAFT has fits really well with this series, so it'd only work with another studio if they did it in the same style (ala Tasogare)

Brain's Base did it pretty well in Penguindrum, but I'm pretty sure there was some overlap there.
