Naruto is a C+ manga. It does things that prevent it from being great, so it passes as decent. The series reached its peak at the Pain Arc, then started to really drop in quality with the exception of some good chapters here and there.

It's just disappointing, since there's a few instances I can think of where a major death could have helped provide some impact to the story and towards the development of some characters. I know everyone would love this, but imagine if Sakura were killed off early in part 2 during their fight with Orochimaru. Instead of her simply taking some deep claw wounds to her arm, maybe Naruto kills her unknowingly while he's overwhelmed by Kurama. It would then rapidly change from Sakura feeling grief and regret over pushing Naruto to this point over a promise, and instead it would be Naruto having to deal with the grim consequences failing to suppress the nine-tailed fox within him.

I stand by the opening arc with Zabuza being a great hook to the series.
The best part about it is, in their first encounter with Zabuza, the main characters are nearly useless. Even the cool rival is way out of his depth. The mentor character isn't there to just spout rhetoric, the mother fucker means business. Not only that, but in that fight, the genin can't just brute force their way through, they really show their worth when they free Kakashi from the water prison.

If Kishi bothered to remember the supporting cast, especially the guys involved in Sasuke Retrieval, maybe you would have cared. Instead you get even more characters thrown at you. Yamato, Sai, Suigetsu, Karin, Juugo, all characters introduced and ended up underdeveloped. Hinata and Shikamaru were the only ones to show more growth as characters since part 1.
