I think Sailor Moon was the real reason why magical girls shift from slice-of-life with magic to fighting bad guys and Takeuchi doesn't seem to be a Nagaifag. Her main inspiration was super sentai after all.
Honey's real contribution to the magical girl genre was the transformation sequence and that stick because anime is mainly made by guys, even the female-aimed cartoons.

Edgy =/= Great Writing
Just because something is dark and violent doesn't mean it's suddenly some kind of masterpiece. Shock value is the cheapest way to make something memorable. A lot of people here think "oh, this manga is obscure and edgy, better brag about it to my internet frendz durr". Evangelion, Madoka Magica, Fate Zero aren't great just because the writers make it "dark". Go Nagai's writing, art are below mediocre. I'd say 90% of Pixiv artists who are just amateurs are more talented than him. Devilman is an overrated pile of garbage.
