I like Tsukihime more than Fate overall, but Shiki's a less than stellar protagonist, especially compared to Shirou's fascinating brand of insane.

He's a more interesting protagonist because he doesn't try to do something universal or try to be some moral figure. At the end of the day, he just wants to live a normal life and tries his best to wrestle with the cards that's been dealt to him.
He is also honest with himself and his emotions like Shirou but he doesn't need to convince anyone, He simply just acts. Shiki was a normal guy given supernatural abilities and yet he still wants to be a normal person even with bigger forces pulling him in.
Also when shiki engages in combat, you know he is wrestling with life and death at every second because of his brain and chest problems. It's harder to believe it's the same for Shirou even if his enemies are Servants. It's also easier to relate to Shiki because he is driven by down to earth mindset like love and simple survival. Shirou is all about trying to be some legendary figure, which isn't bad but you're not going to convince many that he's more stellar than Shiki.

Shirou is insane, but when Shiki goes insane, I always feel it's much more interesting.
Also the scene in Kohaku's route where Shiki and SHIKI sit down and talk is better than any scene in f/sn

If he was less of a faggot and more of a character in the other Near Side routes, maybe they would've sucked less. Even Roa was a better villain.
