But that's the whole problem with cats. They really don't have any natural predators, and are huge pests because of it. People think that a stray cat is cute, but those fuckers are ruining the population of indigenous animals in their area since they can hunt without any real threat.
Knowing the mere fact that the VN gets darker, I knew the cat was going to meet a terrible fate, so I laughed a little when he appeared all splattered.

I don't know about where you live but in my neighborhood cats have plenty of predators; the main culprits are the coyotes but we also have heard reports of small kittens being swooped up by owls and chicken hawks. It's nice that we don't have strays running around everywhere but it sucks not knowing if your cat is going to come home tonight or not.
I think the adaptation is fine and has captured everything that needed to be captured so far.
Grisaia is basically like a prime rib. It's a wonderful read, but there is a lot of fat all over it that can be cut. The more you keep of it, the more delicious it is, but the amount of meat on this one is much much less than the amount of fat.
In fact, I don't even know that any of the routes really are that great at telling a story and I think the anime can improve on that. The things the anime is skipping over are either unnecessary (the stupid fake girlfriend thing, the amazing but redundant Cicada Sisters sketch, the flowing somen scene) or just don't adapt well (the talk with Makina about being average at a lot of things being its own asset, several other scenes made awesome by the writing).
What's worse is, this isn't so much an adaptation as this is a telling of an untold story-- which is the canonical Grisaia common history shared in the second two parts of the trilogy. It is its own thing.
I am a huge fan of the visual novel, but what was good about it was not the plots (or character paths), but the overall atmosphere and feel of the story-- and so far it's been nailed. Plus they've adapted:
1) Alpha Bravo Charlie
2) Running Cadence (though the translation could have made it rhyme to be better "Amane Suou is a bitch in heat / rolling around on a man's bed sheet" is how I'd do it.)
3) Hair Dye
4) Vitamin C
5) It's not my birthday!
6) Tsundere practice
7) Yumiko Confrontation
8) Amane's actual masturbation scene
9) Shark Pouch / Bushdog
10) The car ride with Meowmel.
Like... this adaptation so far is really good and I am glad to get it. I think everyone has really stupidly unfair expectations. Grisaia's character routes were not its strength, please stop trying to proclaim that the anime isn't living up to them, it is.

The cat scene doesn't necessarily need to be sad for you. It was already determined earlier on that Mitcher has hangups regarding death, and this event is what tips her over the edge.
