As far as anyone can tell, the anime is supposed to advertise the VN and get you to read it, so you can probably safely watch it.
On the other hand, the anime makes pretty big jumps, and even though it leaves out content, it spoils a lot.
I personally also believe that it's more fun to watch if you've read it first.
You can hopefully decide based on this. I don't think there's an obviously better method.
