Just finished catching up/reading. Not bad so far.
Main character that isn't totally incompetent or a push over. Has some actual personality to him. The situation in chapter 1 can be chalked up to ignorance.
Also all the other heros and the aristocracy are fucking morons. Even ignoring all the stuff that's proving how much utility Shield has...in gaming a tank class is one of the most important. A pure tank with enough utility to keep others safe enables the usage of pure glass cannon DPS. Otherwise you suffer deaths and it's clear that death is permanent in this world.

Hell shield also seems to have non-% based damage reduction. He's leaving those puny monsters to chew on him all day which indicates a X dmg - X reduction = 0 damage system. In video game terms such a system will almost certainly scale to the point where shield could sit down and have a cup of tea in the middle of a horde of weak assholes while anyone else gets mulched.

Some of the Mario RPGs use a system like that. Sometimes it was a buff or something. Those games don't scale very far numerically so it works fine. Enemies are usually more likely to employ a "I take X less damage. Go get a stronger single attack" then Mario though.
WoW has had some balance issues in tanking that required shifting that around. It's never been the primary damage reduction mechanics, but it's been around. Hitting 100% shield block for example during certain WoW time periods. Oh and there have been some flat spell damage reduction buffs in that game before.
Shadowrun's (tabletop rpg) damage absorption often uses a flat reduction. Though there is often dice involved in that check.
Something exactly like Fallout 2 though? Where it was the basic primary DR system? Most games realize it's better to go with a % as the primary and if they have any flat it's a buff or something specific. Worked well in Fallout 2 because single player game where Power Armor should be crazy strong. (and was)

Uh, I dunno, some fights with power armor deteriorated into 0 damage ping pong until the random number god granted someone a critical hit. I think that's why F:NV and (afaik) Wasteland 2 altered the system to have a minimum percentage of damage that still gets through.

Fallout 1,2 and Tactics had AC, DT and DR and DT was what make Power Armor pretty much invulnerable against small arms fire.
Of course by the time you manage to get a suit in Fallout 2 you would pretty much going against Enclave and their Advanced Power Armor and they were armed with energy weapons, Raiders would no longer be a problem.

Its was not that complex, AC was a accuracy evasion so it was "not being hit", DT was simply Damage Threshold meaning it would negate X amount of damage with DR being on top of that as a percentage.
It also helped it was very vertical, you always knew a armor was better that the ones before instead of a "this or that", the only case I can think were that didnt apply was Tesla armor but it was still until you get Power Armor.
Now things are just too circumstantial and try to have everything being a option so everything becomes shit.

Well, that's the strategic element of RPGs. A game with a single armor or weapon that is flat-out better than everything else can quickly become boring after you get it, unless you consciously try shittier items as a challenge. (Case in point: FO3 and both armors you get from Operation: Anchorage)

In the japanese text, each person has their own speech pattern that makes it easy to tell who is saying what;however, they do not translate well into english, so it does help to put the names infront even when translating. I apologize for my lack of skills to properly convey each character's personality and speech quirk, unless people want me to go add stuff behind eveything they say.
This is a conversation I had with someone helping me out in the translations and pointing out where I can improve.
For example, the king expressing his thoughts to the queen after she freezes him
その魔力の高さ、質、確かにワシの妻！ 一体どうしたというのじゃ！？」
My translation is:
“That amount of magical power, and quality, you are certainly my wife! What on earth happened!?”
But king refers to himself as ワシ , and from what I understand 一体どうしたというの can be translated as "What on earth happened!?" but じゃ would not be translated, and that means I am discarding the king's speech quirk. I think Nobility or people really full of them selves only speak like that. But, I am not sure how to convey that in English. Or I'm misunderstanding and 一体どうしたというのじゃ is just "What on earth happened"
So would a more correct version of the first part would be:
"That amount of magical power, and quality, you are certainly this old man's wife!"
Or
"That amount of magical power, and quality, you are certainly this one's wife!"
tldr: names in front help the one translating too.
