It's officially magic. I'm serious. The first pokeballs were giant husks with resonance crystals inside that would link the captured pokemon to the trainer. It's basically just straight up magic. Modern pokeballs still have the goddamn soul crystals inside. It allows pokemon to feel their trainer's intentions and opens up a layer of understanding between them. When you're not on the same wavelength as your pokemon, an ill suited match, they misbehave and get out of synch with the trainer. To the point where they won't listen to commands or try to run away.

That's not true at all, the first pokeballs were just places you could contain a pokemon. They did shit to actually let you control it, that's why you had relics like the blue and red orb. It's a world of magic, sure, but Apricorns changed that.
Pokeballs are pure tech. The franchise has gone both ways on whether they convert the pokemon to light or shrink them down, but the idea is that they're still aware from the inside. Don't forget that they communicate with the pokedexes and transfer system, and even refused to work in the Deoxys movie because the management system didn't allow the balls to open.

I like the idea that they always will only stay in the ball to be caught willingly, and while some are looking for friendship and will smack the ball to go in like happened when Ash got Charmander, others are looking for somebody they view as powerful and worthy of leading them and need to get a good smacking to show who should be in charge, like a pack leader.
I'd like to see some of this extended and put into one of the games where there's something that could be fought over and over, maybe once a week, but could only be caught once by doing a sidequest where you do something to impress them, like convincing a Snorlax to come with you to eat lots of new and interesting types of food.

Those of us that never stopped caring enjoyed Lucario for a bit because it eased the Charizard talk for a bit.
Fast forward to 2014 where both Charizard and Lucario have mega evolutions and it's fucking awful. They're everywhere. I hope Mega Chesnaught and Mega Delphox (they will happen) are just as good as Mega Greninja (will DEFINITELY happen) so that Greninja doesn't become another force fed mon.
