Japanese products usually have more of the price going to the publisher while US products have a lot of the price going to retailers. It's just the way distribution works in Japan and the US.
But Japanese publishers are famous for embezzling and treating their employees worse than garbage so you probably aren't actually supporting mangaka no matter which version you buy.

I know that they have some questionable translations in Monster Musume. They changed Polt's name to Port and in D-Frag they translate "senpai" as "sempai". So pasically from what I've seen the worst they have done is take a stance on the age old R vs L and Sen vs Sem in Japanese translation

They have a lot of spotty or half-assed translations. Matt Thorn explained it on his blog a bit, it was something like them using a lot of desperate college students with moderate understanding of Japanese and paying them half of what a real translator would receive for their work. Some series like Battle Royale have deliberate changes that just screw with the storytelling and mood.

Doesn't seem like it worked out for them when they've canceled half their series, lost Akira to Kodansha and most of their other long-running series like Gantz and Oh My Goddess have ended in Japan.
