Yeah, that was my problem with the series too. It's not that I don't like it, it's that things become too 'big picture' - The hero remains rather grumpy and sort of a misanthrope even when there's no real reason for him to be. (i.e. He has a tanuki and the super-special demon bird girl fawning over him.)
I would personally have preferred the story to have focused on a solo character. More, he has a whole plethora of powers that aren't actually that useful, and I suppose it's kind of a running gag. I'd just have personally preferred more focus on RPG-adventuring instead of trading and so on.
Like, the shield's abilities are interesting, but the passive bonuses are the ones he relies on. Basically, not too much seems to be happening after the initial points.

Why does it have to be immediately explained? You can't really give a satisfactory answer for this kind of thing. The point in the story at which mysteries like this (why does the church hate the shield hero, why does the king hate him personally, why is the princess a bitch) are revealed alters the story's flow. Minor mysteries can be answered sooner rather than later, but greater ones require build up (either by deepening the mystery or creating the circumstances to make the revelation somehow more enjoyable to the reader emotionally) to make the revelation satisfactory.

Couldn't he do something like - I don't know - activate a shield with a poison or fire aura, then just grab on to the enemy until it dies? He has a few shields like that, right?

He used "change shield", first he used air shield to move it forward and then he changed it to porcupine, paralyzing the bandits.

The chapters in this story are really short compared to other LNs though. I mean a normal LN volume has something like 4-5 chapters + prologue/epilogue maybe. Shield Hero has like 25 or so chapters per volume.
