Scanlation thread.

What are you working on?
>>
Scanning my backlog of manga. I'd like to get into editing, but my eyes suck and my monitor isn't that great.

I just discovered GREYCstoration thanks to a kind tripfag over on /w/. I'm most of you all knew about it already; I'm a newbie though. Really useful plugin, though fairly complicated. I'm still trying to find the right settings for these scans.

De-noise then level, or level then de-noise?
>>
>>113266494
Well, I'm pretty new, but I think maybe something like typesetting would be pretty easy for you. You don't need great vision or monitor since the cleaner should've made it all nice for you anyway. You just a willingness to spend a bunch of your free time putting words on the page and picking appropriate fonts/styles.
>>
>>113266602
If it's denoising at 3000px+ then nothing is better than Topaz, really (on the right hands).

Well, GREYCstoration is free, so there's that. I haven't tried anything else. Before this I was manually trying to level and blur to remove noise and getting less-than-ideal results to put it nicely.

People respond negatively to it because the faggot never shared the script. A scrip like that could actually work very well for a lot of pages. One example where it would be a bad idea would obviously be spreads but other than that it'd be useful for the most part.

>feed raws into autofeed on scanner
>all straight, all scanned automatically
Who even scans their pages wonky anyway, thats a fucking disgrace.
>>
>>113267315
Flatbed scanners provide higher quality raws than autofeed scanners.
>>
>>113267315
There's no rotation going on. Scanned pages from autofeed scanners tend to be straight for the most part. If the pages were a mess before you put them on the scanner, the scans would be a mess too.
>>
>>113267419
depends on the scanner. mine was over £500 and is high quality, the cheaper ones are horrifying though and are meant for monochrome text documents.
>>
>>113267315

I have a flatbed scanner, sometimes my pages come out wonky because the top cover moves the page slightly when I put it down.
>>
I finished QCing Dumbpire 37 yesterday. Think we're still waiting on cleaning though.
>>
>>113267270
I guess that makes sense.

>>113267194
I guess I'll have to look into that then. Playing around with GREYCstoration a bit more, I finally got some pretty good results and I can even throw them into an action I use for all these pages. Shit's pretty slow on my old ass laptop though. Is topaz pretty slow too? i just assume anything I'm going to try here is going to be pretty slow since they're large files with lots of noise.

Yeah, mine is not that good anymore. I think I'll just stick to this since I think I've got it pretty well figured out now, but whenever I get a new machine I'll try to remember Topaz.
>>
>>113267960
My laptop is 4 years old, i3 M330 @ 2.13 GHz with 4 GB of RAM. 600DPI scans are really the only raws that are slow and that's because I set them through more than one topaz denoise. 300DPI are a lot faster. Just a few months ago I was doing 450DPI raws with topaz denoise 5 + surface blur and in about an hour it finished doing all of the preliminary cleaning for 35+ pages. Keep in mind though I had it do more shit than just denoise. What really slowed it down was when I upscaled to 8000px to level shit.
>>
>>113268294
>when I upscaled to 8000px to level shit.

Okay, this is probably stupid question, but what? Why?
>>
>>113268363
It affects the anti aliasing of lines less, I don't remember the exact explanation of why. These were shitty magazine raws though, so it's not going to be the same for high quality raws like tankobon ones or from magazines with amazing paper and printing. I don't have to do that anymore because the magazine switched to better printing so now I can pre-clean in 20 minutes, then level in another 20 minutes, then redraw and burn anything that needs it, and finally downscale and typeset.
>>
>>113268294
Topaz sounds pretty comparable to GREYCstoration then. My setup is pretty similar (less RAM but a decent GPU) and it took somewhere between 1 and 2 minutes to do that page. Still way faster than just going over everything with a white brush which was what I thought I'd have to end up doing.
>>
>>113268294
>>113268532
Also one of the main reasons things would slow down is because I make a separate copy layer of the raw where I do all the cleaning while keeping the raw on the bottom without being touched. This doubles the size of the PSD and so it slows down Ps in some things.

Time to try this shit out.

Sometimes I notice that the cleaning in manga I read is done very very poorly, like the cleaner just did some black brush strokes to hide some shit and didn't bothered to level the rest. Well, I gave it some thoughts and came to conclusion that it might be my monitor settings, and I'm seeing shit I'm not supposed to.
Is there a way to check how my end result would look on different monitors?
>>
>>113269202
The way I do it is set brush tool, alt+left click on where I brushed over text, look at the numbers on the left bar, then do the same on the blacks and whites after leveling. If the blacks are all 0 then it should be the same.
>>
>>113269202
No you're almost definitely seeing people being lazy. Black should be black and white should be white.
>>
>>113269202
It is the monitor settings, but it's not a problem with you. It's the editor/cleaner's monitor settings making them think that a dark grey/improperly leveled black tone is actually solid black, so they don't finish it properly. I mean I guess you could adjust your monitor settings to be darker so that you don't see it, but that'd sort of be like asking for a full set of spices to reseason a dish you ordered at a restaurant because the chef forgot to add salt and pepper.

I see. Well, last question.
Sometimes after straightening out the scan along the panel lines (and these panels are supposed to be straight, I've double checked with ellipsis in the bubbles and other scans) page ends up uneven, so I have to crop off parts of the page. If I were to use distort transformation to fit all the shit into proper rectangle, it end up fucking up screentone in the panes that weren't fitting in.
Is there a trick to this shit or the scanner just simply fucked up?
>>
>>113269909
No. Sometimes you just have to crop a bit of the art.
>>
>>113269939
It pains me to do such thing. Especially if the scans have almost all pages like this.

>>113269909

Wow. I just tried it and you're right. The difference is hugely noticeable too. Damn. Knowing this there's no way I can let myself skip that step now. Only problem I'm going to have with this is that it took a LOT longer to de-noise the upscaled page.

In case it's not obvious what's happening in this picture: bottom layer was scaled up before de-noising and leveling. Marquee shows the cutout in the top layer which was denoised and leveled on the regular sized raw.

Reposting an issue from last thread that got no replies:

I'm pretty much a beginner when it comes to redrawing, and a problem I've been finding is that while I have a drawing tablet, even photoshop's 1px brush is really thick and clunky compared to the manga's lines, and no amount of tweaking with settings that I can see can make it sharper/thinner.

I've also tried:
-Using a stroked pen tool
-Drawing the lines then erasing the sides to make them thinner

Is this an existing problem or am I not using photoshop properly?
>>
>>113270090
You're not supposed to desnoise at 8000px.
>>
>>113270090
Just denoise at 3000, resize to 8000, level, then resize back to 3000, and then resize to your release resolution.
>>
>>113269909
Honestly, I've noticed a ton of books are simply printed a bit crooked to begin with.

If it's on EVERYTHING then it may actually be your scanner. If the arm is at an angle, it can cause the scans to be uneven. It can also be caused if the glass of the bed is sinking in on one side. What happens is that part of it ends up being scanned a bit larger as it's slightly closer and it makes the lines uneven. I'm not sure if that's what you're describing, but that's one of the problems with my scanner.
>>
>>113270090
...I can't tell which is supposed to be better.
I mean, the stuff in the selection boxes might be a bit too sharp but that's definitely preferable to how blurry the rest is.
>>
>>113270134
When I have those issues I just erase the excess with a white brush or with clone stamp tool if it's on tones.
>>
>>113270327
Yeah, the selection is the bottom layer which I scaled up before denoising and leveling. It looks much better. I only just found this denoiser today, so I'm still learning it and I might have over-leveled a bit too. I'm just amazed at what a huge difference scaling it up before doing all that makes.
>>
>>113270471
Just do it like >>113270253 said, there's no need to denoise at 8000.
>>
>>113270134
Use the pen tool instead, then modify the result as you see fit.
>>
>>113270535
It won't make the results worse? I'll have to test that since it would be much faster. I'm doing it in the correct order, right? Denoise, then level. Testing different processes is slow going.

Hmmm, I've tried that but it was quite fiddly, but thanks if there's really no other way around it.

Though in light of what else is going on in this thread maybe I could upscale the page before doing the redraws, I'll remember that for next time.
>>
>>113270647
No, it won't make it worse. The point of upscaling to 8000 is to level it, not denoise, so that the antialiasing and tones will look better as you can see in >>113269479
>>
>>113270693
>Though in light of what else is going on in this thread maybe I could upscale the page before doing the redraws

>>
>>113270578
Is there extra stuff you can do with the pen tool to make the line thinner?

Admittedly I didn't look extensively but don't you have to choose a tool to stroke it with, which would still lead to an overly thick line since the smallest tool is the 1px brush?

I don't have the scans on me right now, but it's something like this. I straightened out by left vertical edge of the panels and then by horizontal edges of the panes using skewing. Rotating ain't better.

Why do you need something skinnier than 1 pixel? Those lines on that hair appear to be thicker than 1 pixel.

>>113269202

That's why I'm afraid to become a cleaner unless I have a nice monitor that's been correctly color-calibrated.

How am I supposed to know? Do I zoom in all the way until I see a grid of pixels, and then check it? Mess with the contrast somehow to make it more obvious?

Even in something easy like Nichijou you get text over things and not inside bubbles with a fair amount of frequency. It varies a lot obviously but I'd say on average I usually end up redrawing 10-15 things? It's usually just objects in the background or pieces of people's heads which are no problem. Irregular screentones are the ones that bother me.

That all feels like the easy part compared to trying to learn how to denoise and level properly right now though.

I do a lot of a doujin scanning but my scanner can't into png, I have a Epson Perfection V37.

I'm trying to improve the quality of my scans a bit. Is there anything better I can do than scan them as jpgs with no compression? I've tried tiff, but there's no noticeable difference when you crank the blacks up really high to check for dust and artifacts.

Pic related is something I just pulled off the scanner.
>>
>>113272543
I downscale shit automatically with a batch action right after I'm done cleaning so I don't save them at original size. If I redraw them at original size that is, sometimes it's actually easier to do them at release size if the space between them is just a pixel or 2.

If your translator translated the sfx, you clean it and let the typesetter do the magic. Also, redrawing bubbles is easy.

Maybe it's just because I'm new to this denoising stuff and I'm doing it in a probably stupid way, but it actually made a very big difference to do the denoising at the larger resolution. Denoising at the lower resolution, the filter took out most of the noise but also messed up some screentones. At the higher resolution is only removed most of the noise. Didn't really see a different between leveling at the higher or lower resolutions, probably because I'm denoising first?

Took me a while to do the comparison though.

I assume I'm doing something out of order here or otherwise making a silly mistake.
>>
>>113274873
Personally I redraw sound effect like sounds made by characters, such as coughing, laughing and stuff like that. *wink* falls into this category as well.
>>
>>113274631
It's a shame most translators ignore sfx. Many famous manga have spawned iconic onomatopoeia that never caught on with western fans. Think Jojo, Dragonball, Hokuto no Ken etc.
>>
>>113275255

At this point I think it's either that the program might not be suited for manga or your denoising settings are too strong and so detail is lost. Here's with surface blur + topaz denoise 5. It's kind of hard to lose detail with that kind of page size though, so I'm confident the settings are too strong for the job.

The worst is reading English TLs that are so shittily translated it's like Google Translate.

Translation isn't just taking words from language and putting them into another. You're not a walking talking dictionary. Anyone can do that shit.

Translation is a goddamn artform. You translate meanings, not words. What are they trying to say? Why are they saying what they're saying? Who are you translating these words for? And how do the cultures differ?

If you're not thinking about all that shit, you're not a good translator.

I dunno.

I had a guy apply for my group once, somehow did a good job on the translation test.

Then he couldn't do a five-page ecchi one-shot within two days. I asked him what the issue was and he said he was having a hard time looking up kanji.

Found out that he was looking up every individual kana/kanji and then plugging it into different translator programs. That's why it took so long.

Had to revise my TL test after that.

There are a couple I've been sitting on for awhile. Honestly, I think I'd be a little irked at first if they got taken from under me, but if they can actually do a better job in a more timely manner, more power to them. If it's half-hearted, that'd motivate me to get off my ass and actually do them myself. Win-win either way, in my opinion, but I think most people wouldn't see it that way and would instead throw a big shit about it.
>>
>>113279714
A year is far more than enough. And yet groups still do it and lash back anyways. On the other hand, an overnight group who does like 3 chapters in a week and then dies is far less preferable than a slow as fuck group who will, one day finish the series honestly.
>>
>>113279583
No, though about 3/4 of what I scan is faggotry and someone did pay me to buy and scan a Hetlia book for them. But that was, against what I know about the series, just regular old dude on lady action.

There's something about fujos and attention whoring I will just never understand. It's not all of them, and I've worked with some really easy going, friendly groups but god damn if there's not a disproportionally large amount of drama around BL/shoujo scans compared to the rest. Even yuri doesn't escape unscathed.

That's why you have to be careful. You don't replace 'itadakimasu' with 'rub a dub dub', that's just injecting your own humor into it. I usually do something like 'let's eat!' or 'let's dig in!' because that's something we in a Western culture might say before eating.

You have to take your audience into consideration. Are you translating for an audience who's been through this shit before? Then they won't mind an "itadakimasu". Want it accessible to people who haven't read it? Use a translator's note, or use a Western equivalent.

Also remember that you don't have to say exactly what the Japanese is saying. If someone's complaining about another character and says something like "so childish" in the literal translation, you don't have to leave it sounding so weird. You can do anything from "Grow up!" or "You're not very mature." or "How old are you, five?", as long as it's true to the tone of the character.

A good translator thinks about all this shit instead of just miming what the Japanese has said. If I could punch every translator that wrote "Don't make such a complicated face"...

including me when I first started out, fuck

Also, if you're a TL and can't find something in a dictionary, don't fucking make shit up.

Google the word. Literally. You'll find blog posts and other people using it.

You can also use "imi" or "to ha" after a word to search for other explanations, either from JP dictionaries or JP Yahoo Answers.

You can't translate something accurately unless you understand what's being said.
