I would like to point out, that insertion sort does really well for small sets, so using a hybrid of merge sort and insertion sort works really well.
It also does perform really well for almost sorted sets, so when there is coherence you can exploit, for example when coding sweep and prune as collision detection broadphase, then you an use it as well.

In Korea, gaming is a big entertainment industry and there are televised shows on gaming competitions as well as a cable channel for gaming. You get an inkling about mmorpg games being broadcast via gaming TV stations and networks from the korean light novel "Legendary Moonlight Sculptor". I've often wished there were fansubs of some of these korean tv shows showing quests or contests as they progressed.

Quake/Arena shooters have simple rules that are easy to work with. That's why mahjong, at least in Akagi's case works. You know the rules and the plays they make are impressive because of it.

I mean they're not simple, but you can learn the basics and a bit more in a short amount of time. It's also a preexisting game, whereas something like Dota 2 has way too many intricacies to get across in an anime, and they can't make up a game for the anime in particular without coming up with convenient asspull rules that get revealed whenever the MC needs them.
Quake is a simple, preexisting game. You move around, shoot the other guy, control the map and manage your stack. It's simple, but hard. Easy to adapt into anime form.
