That's pretty much battle shonen. It's just marketed as seinen because there's a lot more gore and random fucking. The themes are pretty much no different than battle shonen.

It just puts a pseudo realistic spin on it. It's very different from Vinland Saga which is more akin to Historie.
Ravages of Time is probably the biggest mix of shonen/seinen shit, but it pretty much has everything but fan service. Just look at Lu Bu vs Zhang Lei & Guo Ang. It's like a fucking Bleach fight except instead of special moves and paragraphs of exposition they replace it with choreography and cheeky one liners trying to get in their opponent's head.

Like many have said, there was loads of potential, and the author did a lot of things right. I think the author dropped the ball a lot earlier than the forced end though. He could have made much more out of those time hopping antics. He could have gone full "Back To The Future 2" with the plot, but he didn't.. He could have used this so the heroes would staked the cards in their favor, so they'd have a chance to battle an overwhelming enemy, but it somehow just went the usual powerlevel route and it became even worse when the future antics with the grownup kids was determined as "divergent future path that can't be corrected for the people living in it". Felt unsatisfactory and the author could have easily made up some different mechanic.
Also many of the secondary cast were plain uninteresting. That beefy dude for example, who had a best friend who became a superzombie, never got interesting to begin with. Same for the scaredy cat dude. I never really thought "fuck yeah, a chapter about them!".
Overall I liked the early series and lots of things done right, but ultimately, I think the fact that the writing lost steam because the author didn't realize its potential, was what lead up to the cancellation, after which it was a vicious circle and the author then just chose an ultra generic one way fast lane to finish it up in a timely manner.

Because they got relevant around the time the manga was getting axed. You can't exactly develop your secondary cast when you have 20 chapters til the end and your main plot line is in the middle of nowhere.

The catch is though, maybe if the author had managed to make his secondary cast interesting from the beginning, then it wouldn't have been in danger of cancellation to begin with. He managed with the mc couple, so it's not af he's incapable of doing it. What I'm trying to say is that the author had a phenomenal setup, but didn't have the storytelling skill to make the most out of it. By the time the cancellation became apparent, he had already let many plot- and character-related chances pass. That's just my general feeling on this.

Avoid the anime. It's all round shitty. Plot diverges from the manga to do it's own thing and the anime came out when doing studios were still in the transition from traditional to digital animation, so you get shit cgi and cheap looking coloring.

Yes, unless the whole series premise is based around it, authors should stay away from it. Using time travel as a side arc gimmick is a surefire way to fuck things up, since after a short while readers will get the feeling that this is a divergence from the actual plot that should be happening.
The Psyren author had the opportunity to go all out with the time travel thing, since it was at the core of the series, but somehow he managed to sideline the fun concept of "adjust the past->crazy side effects happen in the future" and turn it into a pretty generic "defeat 10 strong dudes and all is well" type of story. Also didn't help that the whole future arc was rendered inconsequential, since it was a "diverging timeline". Bad story decisions all around.
A real shame, early on when the mystery was still in place it was full of suspense. Then after the big reveal he had time travel to play with, but he faltered.
