I watched all of UC Gundam recently (bar Igloo) and I was surprised by the amount of hate ZZ gets on here and on /m/. I mean it starts a bit weird, especially coming off Zeta's ending, but in general I thought it was good. Jewdough is also easily my favourite Gundam pilot so far.

In August 2008, Tomoko Kawakami was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, which required surgery. During a three-year battle with cancer, most of her ongoing roles were replaced by other voice actresses, although Kawakami was able to do some voice work. She died on June 9, 2011 at the age of 41.

Honestly, I really wanted to like it given the fact that I loved the mechanical design, but everything comedic was done better if Xabungle, and every dire situation lacked the dread and gravity that Zeta had. I can appreciate a change in mood, but given the characters involved, and what they had been through prior, it was off-putting at the best of times, and damn inconsistent at the worse of times. The only way to enjoy ZZ is to completely forget everything that happened prior to it, but considering that it references Zeta at every turn, it's next to impossible.

Fuck no, /ar/ would be quickly infested by reddit and ANN goers, I come to /a/ to discuss anime with people who aren't insufferable cunts, as strange as it may seem, not participate in a circlejerk filled with them. One or two threads once in a blue moon is fine, as an excess of it would only deteriorate the quality of discussion. Rather than pining for a board split fueled by dissatisfaction with /a/, why don't you actually contribute to the quality of the board?
>>
>>110576093
[a-S] is actually pretty decent.
I recently downloaded their slayers collection and I'm pretty satisfied with it.
>>
>>110578674
... Why would /ar/ attract reddit, specifically? /vr/ didn't, and I can assure you, a significant amount of /r/anime uses browse /a/, and those who don't would be interested in /ar/.
>>
>>110547850
Since that list has been posted, I've finished MD Geist and Gunsmith Cats. Thanks for Geist, guys.
>>
>>110568050

Blame Berserk and summer classes. Those last three weeks, all my free time was spent catching up with Berserk. It was worth it though.
>>
>>110578930
Because the "it's old, so that means it's objectively better" mentality is rampant among normalfags. Also, /vr/ became a chore to browse since they ran out of interesting things to discuss very quickly and tended to devolve in shitposting. I do not want to see that happening to /a/.
>>
>>110579176
>Because the "it's old, so that means it's objectively better" mentality is rampant among normalfags.
Make the cut off 1989. Normalfags don't watch anime that old.
>>
>>110579277
There's Saint Seiyafags and europeans.
>>
>>110579277
Alright, but there's still not enough (translated) material to keep discussion lively and interesting. /ar/ simply wouldn't work.
>>
>>110579176
What? /vr/ is one of my favourite boards. Here's some posts from the first few pages that are great.

>>>/vr/1775578
>>>/vr/1761750
>>>/vr/1756415

In any case, the "old must be good" mentality isn't quite as popular as you think, since most people don't even watch it. Source: looking at myanimelists connected to redditor's accounts.
>>
I'm about 70 episodes into Ranma 1/2. No idea if I'll ever finish it, I just like watching a couple episodes every now and then.
>>
>>110579657
>In any case, the "old must be good" mentality isn't quite as popular as you think, since most people don't even watch it. Source: looking at myanimelists connected to redditor's accounts.
This so much. And even then, most of the "it's better because its old" fags only watched Cowboy Bebop and Eva and nothing else.
>>
>>110578930
The attempt to latch onto anything retro seems like something people who actively use reddit would flock to, and a given for people who use ANN. Beyond who it might attract, I simply don't see how a board split would increase the quality of conversation at hand. There would inherently be a limit to what can be discussed, and old ground will be tread all too quickly. And, hell, this is actually why generals were discouraged on /a/ for such a long time. And why Precure threads post-Smile are damn awful.
>>
>>110579785
>And why Precure threads post-Smile are damn awful.
And the Monster Girl threads.
>>
>>110579743
I can confirm this. I read almost a thousand comments on the reddit post and there were about a hundred people who asked about Bebop, EVA, and GiTS but nothing else.
>>110579785
Perhaps you should stop judging people you don't known and/or interact with?
>There would inherently be a limit to what can be discussed, and old ground will be tread all too quickly
We've had "Sayaka Threads", "Homu Homu" threads, and "Mami Threads" for two years after the release of Madoka. Enough siad.
>>
>>110579277
Most of the stuff pre-1989 is already discussed on /m/.
>>
>>110579956
Only mecha/sci fi stuff. There's other stuff from that era (shoujo, hentai, comedy) that isn't and is at best mentioned passingly there.

/a/ has discussed several of those in these threads, though.
>>
>>110580026
>/ar/ hentai
Cream Lemon is awful and I won't let anyone tell me different.
>>
I thought this thread was pretty good and troll-free for discussing old anime.

And old anime general's strength, as a general, is actually discussing anime.
>>
>>110579900
>We've had "Sayaka Threads", "Homu Homu" threads, and "Mami Threads"
But is that the ONLY thing that we discuss? No, it's not. /a/ always has something new to talk about because new content is being produced on a daily basis. Something like /ar/ wouldn't have this luxury.
>>110579657
But that was the problem for me with /vr/. I was seeing those same types of threads all the time. It gets repetitive seeing the same stuff everyday and it stops being interesting after a certain point. It's not a bad board or anything, just a repetitive one.
>>
>>110579900
>"Sayaka Threads", "Homu Homu" threads, and "Mami Threads"
>Any discussion
>At all
>Not just endless imagedump and shipping
>>
>>110579900
>We've had "Sayaka Threads", "Homu Homu" threads, and "Mami Threads" for two years after the release of Madoka. Enough said.

Thanks for proving my damn point, as those threads haven't had any new, or meaningful discussion in ages. That's the type of shit I don't want to see happening, nor the type of place I want to be slotted to whenever I want to discuss older anime. I'd much rather get one brief thread like this a day than a thousand of threads like those repeated 24/7.

>>110579861
I used to actually like monster girls before those threads. Those generals actually managed to break a sexual fixation that has been with me since I was four.

>Heidi (too popular according to most)
>Oruchuban Ebichu
>Shamanic Princess
>Those Who Hunt Elves
>>
This seems like a good thread to ask: I watched Gosenzosama Banbanzai recently and I loved it a lot, and it made me realize that the OVA format of the 80s-early 90s probably allowed a lot more potential for artistic freedom. I know most of the OVAs made in that time period were shovelware trash just to keep companies running, but is there a decent amount of material out there like Gosenzosama Banbanzai?

Getter Robo and Mazinger Z are trash series. The original works of both (the manga series) are beyond great, but the Toei adaptations are bad.

>>110582063
Having read the manga, I know it's pretty awesome. Are the anime really that bad? Shame, if so, since the series themselves are great, especially some of the Getter Robo sequels (New Getter Robo, Getter Robo Armageddon).

I'll consider switching them out, since they're both pretty popular anyway.

Anon, that's not how it works.
Year 0 is the beginning of the first century AD. That makes year 100 the second century AD.
That makes year 200 the third century AD, so on and so forth.
1900 is the first year of the 20th century.

Gozensosama should stay, it's genuinely good, unique and still fairly obscure, aka everything people look for in charts.

The Toei series are completely different. The only thing they share is the same gist of plot. Even the robot and character designs are different to an extent. They're just monster of the week shows made for Saturday morning cartoons.

I agree, but apparently it is akin to Studio Ghibli in levels of popularity, which is somethign I want to avoid.

It'd be nice ifKaze to Ki no Uta was on it. I'd also suggest changing the Project A-Ko picture because it doesn't really look like it, unless it was from one of the later ones or something. Five Star Stories would also be another good one to add but I don't really have complaints against any of the other sci-fi/mech entries.

One more I'd suggest is the Devilman: The Birth

Doesn't even need to be that old. Anime from the 00s had plenty as well. Only recently have the japs become prudish.
>>
>>110582617
You need to take out Getter Robo, replace it with New Getter Robo (alt-universe remake of the manga) and replace Mazinger Z with Shin Mazinger (remake of the original manga).
>>
>>110581745

I would suggest adding Burn Up, All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku, Sol Bianca, Agent Aika, Birdy The Mighty, Di Gi Charat, Marmalade Boy, Iketeru Futari, Roujin Z, Wicked City, Megazone 23, Dangaioh, Iczer-1, Dream Hunter Rem, and Tekkaman Blade.

Maybe revise genres. There's a lot of garbage in action genre. And why is Dirty Pair in comedy genre? It's an action adventure show like Lupin III, City Hunter, and Space Adventure Cobra.

Maybe add Cream Lemon because while it is very erotic it's still a classic and it featured talents like Hideaki Anno.

Maybe remove Mazinger Z and Getter Robo because 1) They're super well known and 2) They're not even completely subbed. Remove Gundam because it's even more well known.

Maybe remove Daitarn 3 or replace some other mecha show with Zambot 3 because while Daitarn 3 is good Zambot 3 is more historically significant. Tomino got his "Kill 'Em All" nickname there.

I'll keep those in mind. There's "garbage" in the action section probably just because you don't like those kinds of shows. I find "shitty" action shows to be quite good.

I won't remove Gundam because it's more of a recommendation for Zeta and ZZ, the series as a whole, which a lot of people haven't seen.

Dirty Pair is in Comedy because I thought it was funny. I may change it from 14x7 to 15 or 16x7, so perhaps I will move it to Sci Fi.

All of your recommendations have been noted, except Cream Lemon, because Creamy Mami has filled our cream quota.
