Why doesn't Anime do adaptations of actually good literature?

Because let's be honest, Japan can't compare to high tier western literature.

>No Dune anime
>No Foundation anime
>No Moon is a harsh mistress anime
>No X-Com anime
Why don't they just hire American/European writers?

If decently animated an anime War and Peace would be quite good I think.

Because it costs money.
Pride.
You are not the target market.
Nobody want to adapt literature into anime outside of Japan, you'd make a movie instead for the west.
OP is retarded as always.

>No Foundation anime

Well, that'd be quite a huge investiment - the Foundation cyle alone is composed of 7 books, and to do things "right" you'd have to adapt Robots and Empire cycles (another 7 books toghether) beforehand.
As "single standalone movie" though...give End of Eternity.
Please.
>>
Japan has great literature. They mostly just adapt shitty light novels because anime are commercials meant to advertise the source material. Most decent books won't get improved sales by advertising to otaku.

Because animation studios need to get paid. And the current way things are done is comic book publishers selling comic books, or lately, record companies selling music pay them to make a show. They would have to a)either get paid by western book publishers to make an animation or b) license the copyright and not get paid for animating a show and crossing their fingers that they can either sell it to TV channel or sell DVDs/BDs.
>>
Shit man, I just want a Flashman anime. That would be dope as fuck. It's like 19th century British Rance.

If I compared the Screenplay/Teleplay writing I've seen from anime in the last 20 years and compared it to the Screenplay/Teleplay writing from the west, I'd say Japan is just as good if not better than the west.

Also, you're trying to compare 75 years worth of literature to an entire countries literature you probably haven't even read.

War and Peace would be surprisingly appropriate as an anime series. If would be like LotGH, except instead of being dry as fuck it has the biggest cast of actually interesting, well written characters in anything excellent slice of life stuff. Fuck the idea that Russian authors are supposedly depressing, it's bullshit.
>>

I don't want to sound butthurt here or anything, but why do people male these threads again?
I'd like to think people are not so stupid as to not being able to figure out the answer themselves.

After a while, it seems like the only purpose of threads like these is circlejerking over the books you're read and how superior they're to anime and whatnot.
>>

Fushigi no Kuni no Alice
Gankutsuou

Some of Japan's local talent is pretty good, I wouldn't mind more adaptations along the line of LoGH, NHK, Tatami Galaxy, SSY, etc

Just stop with that light novel shit
>>
>>110541251
No one in Japan cares about these books. Hey, lets spend a lot of money to buy the rights and then spend even more to adapt something no one here cares about.

None of this ever remotely good literature also.

>>
>>110541251
>Why don't they just hire American/European writers?
Here's some food for thought: maybe, just maybe, you haven't read many good books by Eastern authors... because they're not translated? I like Western authors as much as you do and perhaps more, but there's no need to categorically dismiss half of the world like that.

>>110541578
No you wouldn't, that doesn't even make any sense - the "core" books are Foundation, Foundation and Empire, and Second Foundation.

>>110542076
Consider the following:

loli Shrike
>>
Do those books have cute girls I can waifu?
>>
I like Foundation. But even I know it would work better as a live action adaptation. For fuck sake, it influenced Star Wars and Star Trek. There's no reason to turn it into an anime when the audience would be expecting a science fiction design similar to those.

And anime has done tons of adaptations of literature. Half the Miyazaki/Ghibli works have been adaptations of western literature such as Masterpiece Works, Lupin, Kiki, Ponyo, Arrietty, etc. And tons of other anime designers have taken inspiration from or directly adapted western works as well.
>>
>>110542108
>loli shrike

Also rachel weintraub, and moneta
>>
ender's game and snowcrash would both make excellent anime.

I think the main reason is that there's not a large fanbase of american sci fi in Japan - so there's no initial jumpstarting fanbase that can be used to counteract the costs of royalties.
>>
>>110541872
I was thinking along the same lines. Tolstoy has so many great girls and scenes focusing on them doing girl stuff. Since it would animated, you could easily follow everything without having to keep track of names alone.
>>
>>110542261
>the costs of royalties.
Even if there was no royalties, there's no consumer base to cover the cost of production.
>>
>>110542322
well...I mean origional sci-fi anime DO sometimes get made
>>
>>110541945
>Gankutsuou
Watching Gankutsuou after having read the Count of Monte Cristo, I have to say the adaptation is pretty faithful, albeit obviously quite short.
It's simply not possible to do a perfect adaptation of such a massive amount of storytelling and internal feelings/monologues in 24 episodes.
Also, the art was amazing.
This anime needs more love.
>>
>>110542348
Like Aldnoah, right?

Why did Dennou Coil have to bomb so bad?
>>
>>110542348
They may be original stories, but they still go by usual sci-fi anime tropes and all that jazz.
>>
>>110541251
>Japan can't compare to high tier western literature
Fuck you, you obviously know nothing about Japan's literary output if you think anything Heinlein wrote is better than Kokoro. Try reading Yukio Mishima, Kobo Abe, Ryunosuke Akutagawa, Natsume Soseki, Osamu Dazai, Shiga Naoya, Junichiro Tanizaki, Yasunari Kawabata and Shusaku Endo before you pass judgement you cretin.

You know I'm surprised that no one has made an adaptation of Ryunosuke's Kappa. It's a hilarious and bizarre story that would work perfectly as a comedy SoL with a definite conclusion at the end.
