HOLY CRAP IT WAS ALL A LIE

I always thought the 5 cm/s is a reference to the speed at which cherry blossoms fall to earth.

Today I was curious what the average speed of a human at it's life is. Didn't even think of the anime at this time.

Found out the average distance a human travels in a life is 120.000 km. While the average time to travel this distance is 76 years (average age - baby time - unable to move time)

Guess what

12.000.000.000 cm / (76*365,25*24*60*60)s = 5.0033 cm/s

Now his whole "at what speed must I live to be able to see her again?" stuff starts to make sense

Also 5 cm/s general

The symbolism in that movie was amazing.
I love how, in the first episode, both Tohno and Akari is symbolized as birds, you can see them flying alone, and when Tohno meet Akari, two birds fly together.
Second episode, Kaere was the paper plane she threw, and Tohno was the spaceship. I love how, the second Kaere lets go of Tohno, he "leaves the earth" as in, he lost his final chance to find happiness/love.

THE MOTHERFUCKING TRAIN ;__;
>>
>>109392912
Shinkai has a massive boner for bird symbols and trains as iconic of isolation. They show up in a similar capacity in basically every film he's done. He has a weirdly melancholy association with trains and I really like how he uses them as awkward little torture chambers for some of his characters. It's the inertness of just sitting and watching the world literally pass you by, surrounded by people but none of who you know that makes it a great little amplifier of all the themes of social anxiety and tension he plays with.

Furthermore, according to Wikipedia the speed referring to Cherry Blossoms comes directly from the director's notes, although the source isn't working for me.

Is it possible that there was some hidden meaning behind it? Sure, but like I said, it's circumstantial, and it's obvious that the cherry blossoms were part of the symbolism regardless.

>>109395590
It wasn't about him waiting for her, it was about the fact that he thought she was still waiting for him. The full arc of the film is the same as the arc of the first episode. He gets on the train telling her he'll be there at a certain time and to wait for him, and when things beyond his control get in the way he's plagued by the thought that he's left her waiting out in the cold and the snow. Fast forward to their adult years and he still thinks she's out there alone and waiting for him. It's not even that there was some deep love, in fact the very fact that it wasn't a "true love" story is what gives it more punch. He was just a normal kid who never got any closure to his first romance and the uncertainty of it ate away at him until he could get over it.

it's not even an attempt at emotional manipulation, it's just a straight forward expression of the idea at work int he story. It's not like in some action series where suddenly the plot has to shift gears and suddenly change tool sets to be emotionally evocative, the story is at its core emotional. The fact that you seem to assume there's some cold devious machinations behind it is really more reflective of that fact that you're emotionally inept than anything else. If it's not your thing, it's not your thing. No one's trying to force you to enjoy it. But when you feel the need to go out of your way to rationalize your opinion that no one asked for you're clearly acting out of defensive concern for your own ego rather than anything remotely rational.

Wow. Thanks OP.
>>
>>109397922
What didn't you get?

It was basically life moving on and letting go of the past.
The kid made a promise to the girl whom he liked.
Shit happens, such is life, but the kid keeps dwelling on not being together.
The second portion focuses on a random character to show that she's interested in him but because he such a stick in the mud and only looks in the distance, he doesn't notice her.
The end is basically him realizing that he's nowhere in his life and it sucks.

The end is a montage of his life up to that point.
The train symbolises his connection to the girl whom he likes.
The train passing is his connection being permanently cut which is why you see her vanish, she was never there.

The LN says that afterwards, he hooks up with the surfergirl and dumps the girl at the office or something (can't really remember but I know they hook up)

Themes about distance and letting go were well done.
It really wasn't hard to understand to be honest and was pretty well done though the pacing sort of kills it and the montage saves it.

Anything else you didn't get?

I really liked "Garden of words" and "5cm*s^-1" but I thought "Voice of a distant star" was pretty bad. The animation in particular seemed really unpolished, though i wonder if my dislike is due more to getting used to Shinkai's stuff.
I still have to watch "The place promised in our early days" but I might actually wait sometime before I do because of this.

Voices of a distant star was really good, I wish it had been longer, I thought it looked nice but it would have been much better in HD it is from 2002 though, I'm surprised it's not been remastered.

Voice of A Distant Star was one of his early works, so the animation quality was not good as his recent work.
But it has the similar vibe with his other works.
Also his VA skill was not bad.

It's amazing the amount of feels that were packed into the final minutes of the film that you fail to appreciate if you only watch it once. In the process of syncing this I noticed the focus that's placed on the mailbox and how it reflects their growing estrangement. Also missed the one-second shot of the delicious tomboy that lusted after MC's cock crying when he left for the big city

Good job OP, I'm proud of you. Do you think they or the author thought about that while writing it?

MC spirals down so hard in the end, the part where he looks back at the rail-crossing while the waifu-proxy keeps walking is too fucking real.

This. The anime didn't leave much of impressions on my first watch a few years back then.
But then I cried like a nigger bitch after watched it for the second time a couple of months ago

I'm not saying it was bad, it was just bland for me and some actual (which was fine as it was, minimalistic and all) would've helped me to enjoy it more. I thought it was very similar to an ass long third wave post-rock song, too much build-up for a far too moderate climax.
