They know the game doesn't look beautiful (honestly though it looks way better than the first trailer, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1anpA7ZTvQ ), but their budget was low, and they decided to make their own engine, instead of something like Unreal 4. They were aware that by making their own engine and moving to 3D, the visual quality wouldn't be great, but it'll be better in the long run to train their staff in 3D games, as 2D just isn't viable for them atm.

Well a shit budget is part of the reason. You can only put so much time and effort into each character of a 50 character game if you have a relatively shit budget.Fuck SNK barely made a 2 million dollar profit in 2015, they were hemorrhaging money before thatNot to mention SNK has always been kinda shit with 3D. As well as them using their own engine made from scratch, which means that they are still figuring shit out and lighting would be dubious at first. There's people who say that they should have used UE4, but the thing with that is that yes, it's relatively cheap to use for a single game, but when it comes to making multiple games (which the devs want and would do if XIV is successful) it gets expensive with the royalties they would have to pay on top of learning how to use it. Developing their own engine means that they can better it as it goes, on top of already knowing the ins and outs of it as well as not having to pay anyone royalties. Thus making it cheaper in the long run.
The newest build already seems to have all the menu options including the option for online, so that means they've been tinkering with it already. The game is already done and was only waiting for printing and rating classifications, which it already has. So have your fingers crossed anon.

All those things is still less than launch KoF14. There are still less stages than KoF. The roster is still a third of that in KoF14. And in KoF14, you don't need to grind survival mode to unlock those characters. There are more modes like Time Attack and so on.
Promises is all Capcom and Ono are good at. They've released half a game and they have the balls to charge you money for you to content complete the game. Sure feels great paying 50k FM so the shitty waterfall stage doesn't look like a tumor.

As far as something like 'excitement' goes, I disagree. You seem to get a lot of mileage out of your bars in 14, so smart usage of meter can mean a lot to a round, especially when someone manages to get a clean hit when sitting on a full stick of butter.

I don't really find meter management especially exiting in this game compared to others, from the footage and streams I've seen people just generally had enough to do what they needed
On that note supers really look like ass here, they would look ten times better if they didn't constantly cut with each action. For one super it can be a neat thing but it makes them all lack impact and make me think of skullomania's super

Big difference between the games is as for XIV all that content is available at the start. All characters at the start, all colors at the start not just one or two, all stages at the start, everything else at the start. Nothing is locked behind money, fight money grinding, season passes or updates. They both went with different business models. Whether having everything available at the start or trickling it down is better I don't know. All I know is that people seem pissed at the way capcom handled things. I just want to play my game.

The thing is that in KOF14, you have one meter. No secondary resources.
You wanna go into max mode? That's a meter.
You want to use a super? That's a meter.
You getting pressured to hell and back? Okay, you can either Guard Cancel Blowback or Guard Cancel Roll to try getting out of pressure, but neither are infallible, and they are both a meter.
If you want to do some huge hail mary combo and burn all your meter, you have to be ready to have limited defense options afterwards, which can be really dangerous with how aggressive offense can be in KOF.
Meter can end up pretty abundant, but usually only in the later rounds, since losing a character gives you a meter and increases your meter cap and since people tend to put characters that are strong without or with very little meter first, so their later, more meter reliant, characters can burn them when they need to.
As far as cinematic cut stuff, I don't really see it outside of some of the big climax DMs and stuff like grab supers.
Everyone gets a zoom-in for the super pause of CDMs and the EX DMs, but that seems like a 3D fighting game standard at this point.

The thing a lot of people seem to miss though is we aren't at the start any more, we are 4(?) months in and that is the game KoF is being sold next to. Unlocking stuff is a good way to keep people interested, they like earning stuff though stuff like survival colours are a bit much and capcom have even said they are working on an alternative. Plus being able to get dlc for free is a great thing as is them doing all updates for free so you don't need to by super, ultra etc. You are purposefully twisting a negative when both games have a lot of positives
Plus adding stuff over time is a good way to get people coming back, it's part of the reason we have had SF threads since the game has launched cause people always want to talk about the new thing being added. The general opinion on SFV has shifted a lot, loads of threads recently have been asking if they should get it and the general opinion has become now that yes is in a good state to buy and cheaper now.

That's great, i am yet to see anyone really worry about spending meter though as it is earned pretty quick and you have a lot stored up even in earlier rounds. Maybe it is just cause early days but I have not seen the meter management been any more significant or hype than elsewhere

The ones I've seen keep using that choppy style, even Clark's that for no reason cuts to five different angles that don't look great and lose the impact. Clark's isn't too bad, though I could do without the repeat-the-slam-3-times thing.
When you mentioned Skullomania, I was thinking stuff like Angel and Yuri's Climax moves, which I think are pretty evocative of that sort of thing where it cuts to a completely different pose/attack after each hit, but for Clark's, everything seems like a singular action, barring the ending, which reminds me more of TvC Frank than anything else.
I do think they have the camera too damn close to everything during a lot of the climax moves, and I've noticed that they are doing goofy pose-at-the-end type stuff a lot more, which I'm not quite sure how I feel about yet.

Ash did not erase everything that happened in his arc (2003, XI and XIII) from existence, he rearranged time and space so his and his family presence could never be acknowledged, history went by as if his whole lineage never existed, but some events did happen.
- Rose being brainwashed to host the 13th KOF still happened, Adelheid conforts the freed Rose in the end.
- Those From the Past somehow are aware their master, Saiki, got defeated even though he supposedly never existed now, they regroup at the end, Shion from XI is seen there.
- Elizabeth's attachment to Ash was so great he still cried for him after he rewrote himself out of reality, his headband flew on betty's hands, she keepts herself attached to it, feeling she lost someone dear to her, crying in mourning.

As a pretty good 13 player I played it and I found it mostly fine. Max is more broken than I think people realise but they have somewhat fixed the really janky neutral game of 13 by making st.a actually functional as an anti air again and a few other quality of life changes.
My main concern with the game is that it's still damage = meter and anti airing does very little on its own, which runs the risks of turning it into another jumpin fest unless you are Kim or one of the other characters that can tack meter onto their anti airs so they actually do damage.
In addition, jumping CDs are generally weaker as air to airs it seems. I think they made a conscious effort to avoid the Takuma/Karate j.CD situation again.
Another interesting change is that close C is no longer cancellable on whiff, which is a significant nerf to the reverse DP option select which made punishing crossup attempts near automatic.
You also cannot activate CD blowback unless you're standing, another attempt to weaken an option select. (You can still block a crouching attack, stand up while in blockstun from that low attack and CD)
Alternate guard also no longer works.
The main issue I have is that meter is given to you like candy and there is no real disadvantage to poking in neutral and hitting max every time you do. If it hit you get a 50% combo from your st.B poke. If they blocked it your activation is safe and you didn't just fuck yourself over like doing this with HD would in 13, because all you did was use a bar, you are now powered up and you potentially even get a mixup because you now autoran in. I think this will make punishing/poking EXTREMELY braindead and is a major issue.
Equally, all MAX combos seem to be confirm>EX move>EX move(launcher)>non EX special move>Either your free 1 bar super for being in max, or more.
There is virtually no reason not to do your max combo whenever you have 1 bar, which is almost all the time. I think it's homogenising.

I think it'll be more freeform than 13 was.
13 was actually very rigid. There was a wide pool of 'viable' point characters. You could play at least a dozen or so different characters there without really gimping yourself. Second was also decent but at that point you needed a character that could utilise HD due to how powerful it was and you would usually have it at that point in the game.
Anchor was the real killer though. Since so many games would come down to whoever got a clean confirm on the 'anchor' round first, characters NEEDED to have safe, low risk pressure and extremely high HD damage to dump all their meter onto the other character and win the game off the one touch they get. This meant that if you knew what you were doing, your third character would be Vice, Iori(Claw), Kim, or Shen. There was some room for niche anchors like Chin and Ash, but they were clearly suboptimal to those characters and were both significantly harder and less consistent.
14 though I don't think there's going to be such a huge disparity between 'anchors' and other characters. Everyone can max combo and as I said they seem relatively uniform across the board. Who knows though, maybe max combos will turn into something different.
I will say though that the game is unlikely to be super balanced, like any KoF game. Already characters like KoD look like total garbage. Keepaway also seems really strong. It's much more difficult to deal with basic fireball keepaway then 13 and I think the best characters will be those like Athena/Robert/K' who can do that well. Rushdown is also kind of nerfed by the generally slightly floatier jumps (easier to react) and that running now has 'acceleration' so runstop pressure is much weaker as you won't get to your full runspeed if you're doing stuff like cr.b>run>cr.b. It doesn't work nearly as well.
Again though, this is just my thoughts, I could be totally wrong.

I'm not that great of a player, but from watching gameplay I can see that meter gives incredible damage in XIV. I feel like the mechanic of gaining a free bar when you lose around is overkill.

Do you think the slower jumps would partially mitigate this problem? Because even though anti-airs don't do much damage, maybe it's possible to consistently anti-air, making jumping in a weaker option anyway?

It probably would mitigate it to a degree, it really depends on whether someone has a super oppressive jumpin like Takuma/Karate and a few other characters in 13 did. In that game you HAD to use a DP to stop it because if you tried to do it with a normal you would usually trade and it wouldn't be in your favour at all and if you blocked you were then in a mixup.
It might be okay. I found DPing jumpins to be much easier and while it may not do much damage, maybe it'll be enough to prevent it being so dominant. The other side of it is that turning in MAX gives you EX DPs which are actually pretty scary damage, so that might be the solution.
The issue I see is the disparity in damage from AAs though. Like, Kim for example. If Leona or Terry do their 'flash kick' sure, they work. If Kim does however, Kim can freecancel at the peak of his flash kick into a super. So while Leona and Terry would maybe do 10%ish if they're lucky, Kim is doing 30-40% for virtually the same thing. I worry that having that ability will be extremely strong, especially considering that it no longer costs anything to cancel into super from specials, there's no drive cancels anymore, you can just do it.

That's the other mechanic that stood out to me as being weird. It really doesn't seem necessary to have the point character canceling into supers like 15 seconds into the first round.

The interesting thing is that it only applies to normal specials. You can't cancel EX specials into supers as far as I'm aware, which is why all max combos end with a normal special even though they could usually theoretically do a EX one for more damage.
I imagine it's a deliberate move to even the playing field and give all characters, even those without traditional launchers, easy ways into their supers beyond normal>command normal>super. Who knows. We'll see how it turns out.
