It's the crux of shooters that they generally have highly lethal combat where the player's ability to quickly dispatch enemies without taking damage them self is the main test of skill.
Once you introduce a boss, you remove the ability to quickly kill while still being able to quickly die yourself.
I'd argue that Serious Sam type games do it fairly well since it's no longer about quickly killing, but avoiding non-hitscan projectiles while returning your own.
