There is a point in pixel art where if the asset becomes big enough it will just look like SD / HD art shrunken down.
You can pull it off in objects and landscapes, but particularly if you're using too much anti aliasing there is really no escaping it.

Restricting yourself to machine limitations is a waste of time, if you ask me. The point of pixel art is taking advantage of the limited space. Making good pixel economy. You can do that with any limitation you give to yourself. You just have to experiment, and see what works for you. Try drawing things with as few pixels/colors as possible.

This guy ported a game to the NES and made a video breaking down a lot of stuff. It gets pretty interesting.
Basically though, NES sprites allowed for 3 colors (technically 4, but one of them was always a "transparent" color). Mega Man sprites used a technique where the overlapped multiple sprites to make a single object. Mega Man's face is actually a separate sprite from his body.

I've got the engine done. I'm basically just building maps and sprites now. Once thats all in I'll add story. It's basically a Castlevania DS game except set in an open ended small town. The environments are slightly more akin to adventure games though, less platformy. Character progression is quest based, like Zelda, because I hate grinding. NPCs will basically be like Dark Souls, rescue/chat to advance their stories. Once you beat the area you boss you can transform into a monster form similar to the boss to access new areas etc. Killing the area boss also removes half the enemies in the area to make navigation easier.

Some people seem to think that you just need to manipulate pixels and some color theory in order to be a good pixel artist, while every bit of good pixel art I see is a well-drawn or well-taken image, which is then converted into pixels in a creative and effective way.
Basically, I'm nowhere at that level right now.
