- Microsoft shot itself in the foot with these aweful conferences in 2013. Their reputation hasn't recovered since.
- Sony has a history of succesful consoles and a good brand, so they naturally attract a lot of people with the name "Playstation" alone
- Their marketing was fucking brilliant. All this nostalgia pandering to the end of the 90s and start of the 00s is exactly what the people love at the moment. They reminded people of their nostalgia for the first and second playstation and it worked.
- They also played the #4theplayers card good. Basically, the signalized to everyone: If you want to play "real" games, come to us. No TV bullshit, just games. Of course this was just marketing, but it worked.
- Japan hates dirty americans and their Huegbox and europe has been Playstationland for a long time too, so Sony had good cards there to begin with. The only place where they really have to "battle" is in murrica
- They hype up shit like shenmue, FF7Remake and so on as exclusives, even if they come out on other plattforms too. But they present them on their conference so people see it as a sony title.
- There are some good games coming. Third partys and exclusives. If you are a weeb, Playstation is pretty much your only choice if you want to play everything and don't want to wait for PCports.

Anyone who says PS4 sells because of weeb games or Bloodborne is downright delusional.
It sells because of marketing, and because Microsoft let the Xbox brand crash and burn. The tail end of the 360's life was all about Pizza Hut apps and Kinect shit overstaying it's welcome. Meanwhile PS3 has games like The Last of Us with insane marketing and paid reviews giving the Playstation brand a lot of momentum.
The PS4 reveal happened before the Xbox One reveal, and it was not a great showing. A lot of people had questions and were underwhelmed by what was shown off. Microsoft had an outstanding chance to one-up them, but blew it hard. DRM, mandatory Kinect, no used games, people didn't like that. The biggest offender was the always online Kinect camera that sent a wave of fear across the internet.
Seriously, nobody bought the PS4 because of the games themselves. They bought it because it's popular and the other guy isn't.If people were buying consoles for the games, Wii U would be a lot more successful.

Not because the console needed it, but because the community created it with XBMC on the original xbox and they wanted to continue what the hacking community did. It was a game console first, but you could play media if you wanted as a secondary function
That's what people wanted in a game console. That's why the 360 was successful before Kinect. And that's everything Don Matrick did wrong with the xbone. Even EA were pissed and threatened to pull support, it was that bad.

Which is true, however reputation goes a long way. You released a broken game or two, and you'll never ever hear the end of it even if you did consistently release working games after a while.
