I'm rewatching Mai Hime right now. It still holds up for me. Same for Simoun and Marimite. Meanwhile I tried to watch Yuru Yuri and Yurikuma Arashi recently and dropped them both. I'd honestly rather watch a bait show that has even marginal character development and plot than some moeshit that goes nowhere and nothing happens.

I get it I personally liked My Hime more. Shizuru's Otome characterization was cooler but I preferred Hime's fight scenes and overall story. And Hime Natsuki.
Although EXA Natsuki beats all other incarnations for kicking Mai's ass so easily even if she dies at the end.

I despised Otome's main plot (who the hell decided to okay a magical girl anime about two teenagers in a love triangle with a man in his twenties, anyway), but I rather liked how the returning cast were portrayed. It was a nice contrast to see them all happy like that compared to how dark My-Hime was.
I think My-Hime is still the superior work overall, even with the shitty ending.

There's a lot more to Otome's main plot than the Sergei love triangle and it always bothers me that people can't see past that. Mai's flip-flopping between Tate and Reito was way more irritating imo.

The problem is that it clearly overshadows it, especially with Nina's behaviour being a major influence of what happens and therefore her ridiculous obsession with her adoptive father becomes a major plot point that can't be seperated from what is happening.
In Mai Hime while Reito became the man behind everything was the final conflict for Mai fighting Mikoto and getting throuh her, making it easy to ignore her constant blubbering between them. It also helped that a lot of Mai's motivation came from her relationship with Takumi or Mikoto. Mai Otome improved a lot when the focus for Arika went from Sergey to her duty as Otome and vessel of the queen.
Personally I would like Otome better if they had focused on the politics more. Also the whole "Otome cant have sex with men or they loose their power" and the whole training being basically "how to be the perfect maid waifu in servitude of your master" were kinda eh. But thats anime for you

This is my feelings too. Both the Tate/Reito stuff and the Sergey stuff was obviously annoying being a /u/-fan, and also not particularly well-done in general (especially with the age-difference for the latter). But in Mai Hime it felt very much like a sub-plot to me, mostly developing Mai's character and driving her decisionmaking, just like other characters had their own sub-plots - hell, in a way Natsuki kinda had the focus of subplots in Hime since she was the intersection point for Shiziru, Nao and Haruka/Yukino. Meanwhile in Otome, the Sergey it basically outmuscled and interfered with the main plot too much, while also leaving all but those three characters out of it and, because of that, making them feel underdeveloped to me.
That kinda defines how I felt about Otome - all the characters' story-arcs felt too separated, partly because of the sheer scale. In Hime it was one small gang of powerful people in one place, most of them friends or at least acquaintances at some point. Their stories intersect organically and while the final episode was a crock of shit, I really did enjoy how the writers portrayed that, had them relate to each-other and forced them to live double-lives. In Otome, the story spans countries and even continents and there are just so, so many characters, I feel none of them got any kind of satisfying development and only the main three got any kind of focus.

Honestly Sunrise did well with Hime, aside from maybe Akane who was basically just shock value and first kill material, we know the motivations and backstory for all other girls. That's a lot more than most anime with such a large cast can say. It probably helped that Mai Hime had a coherent theme while that kinda fell apart in Otome. Hime was all about the different kinda love (romantic, platonic, family etc) these girl experience and their struggles with them. In otome because aside from the three main characters they also tried to talk about politics, duty and some vague ethics, while trying to throw as many cameos from Hime in as possible. Both were vastly better than the game and manga though
I enjoyed Haruka and Shizurus almost friendship I wish we could have seen if they ever could see eye to eye in Hime

Didn't overshadow it for me, clearly. Honestly I forget how big a part it actually is every time I watch it because I enjoy the rest of it so much. But like I said, I'm also watching for more than Shiznat, who are barely featured in Otome - Natsuki has more meaningful interaction with Nao.

I can't see Mikoto beating Shizuru. Yeah she was super strong among the HiME but so was Shizuru and the age/experience gap should give Shiz the edge + the matter of Kiyohime being an utterly broken child. Also Natsuki beat Mikoto and still lost to Shizuru up till the kiss.

That's pretty much how it works in the anime. If you pay attention Kiyohime's size actually fluctuates a little like when Nao trapped it during her rematch with Shizuru it was smaller than it's appearance when it protected Natsuki from a rampaging Kagutsuchi. Or during Shizuru's battle with Natsuki where it was huge.

Neko!Natsuki and Tachi!Shizuru are basically canon, but I like it best when Natsuki gets more assertive from time to time and knows how to be serious about it. Shy and grumpy Natsuki is very cute but if its only Shizuru who is affectionate and initiates that would just seem too sad and one-sided.
