Yes, it really tries to say something different, but people disagree on if it was successful. The lead girl is excellent as is the supporting cast. Lots of familiar faces. Of special note is the mom, played by ex-porn star Traci Lords. I've seen her act before, but she was amazing in this and was responsible for a moment in the film that absolutely destroyed me. Kudos.

Yes. As a big samurai movie fan, it is a top tier example of the subgenre. Highly recommended. It is part of a trilogy, and its "sequel" The Hidden Blade is also excellent. Haven't seen the third one, Love and Honor, yet, but just got it and can't wait.

Oh man are you in for a treat. Don't expect anything too action packed though. It's mostly a character study and love story, but is made with such skill and beauty in every aspect of film making that it is just a real pleasure to watch. There also is some incredible cathartic violence, however. And it stars Hiroyuki Sanada (picture related) who is actually an amazing actor, capable of great subtlety.
Other samurai movies I highly recommend:

Hisshiken torisashi (Sword of Desperation) (2010)
The Samurai Trilogy with Toshiro Mifune. First one is Samurai I: Musashi Miyamoto (1954)
