I think it's interesting that Jon showed such recklessness and lack of planning leading up to the battle. He was always a bit brash, and of course he's rather young and inexperienced to be an effective commander, but he recieved the same kind of training at Winterfell that his lord brother Robb recieved, who was an excellent commander. Jon has the training, he just doesn't have the smarts. But why? Why is he in such a rush to just sprint headlong into a battle he knows he is not likely to win, vastly outnumbered and outequipped? Everything he's worked for, defending the northern border of Westeros against the white walkers, allowing the wildlings through the wall to form an alliance of conveniance, a purpose that he ultimately DIES for, is he really willing to just throw it all away in one insane gambit? One could argue that he wants to take Winterfell to secure a defensive position against the armies of the dead... but he already had a stronger position, THE WALL, which he abruptly abandoned.

Emilia Clarke's "acting" has somehow managed to get worse, holy shit. In the scene with the masters, she just squinted. That was it. The pre-battle scheme of Ramsay is what kicks this death-wish into overdrive: Ramsay kills Rickon before the battle even starts, sending Jon into an absolute frenzy. Now that the last Stark son is dead and the fate of the castle is in question even if they should manage to take it, Jon has lost all sense of purpose. His entire reality crumbles before him into dust. Not only does he not care about the white walkers and the fate of Westeros anymore, he doesn't care about the Starks, or Winterfell. The only purpose he truly cared about has been taken from him. All that is left is death. He throws away all the plans that he and his co-commanders made the day before, and sprints toward the enemy calvalry BY HIMSELF, fully knowing that he will die. In fact, this is exactly what he wants. The eerie, solemn music that plays, along with his somber facial expression, and the fatalistic way he casts aside his scabbard, believing he will never again sheathe his weapon, all point to this. Jon then becomes a killing machine, fighting with a ferocity we have never seen from him before. He seems crazed, covered in blood, and throwing himself into the thick of the melee. Not only is he driven mad by the death of his brother and the loss of the Stark legacy, he is genuinely READY TO DIE, and he's gonna meet it head-on. Which brings me to the other interesting character in this episode, Ramsay.

Up until this point, we've never really seen Ramsay be shaken by anybody. In fact, he seems almost supernaturally confident. Nevertheless, the events of this episode make this perfectly clear: Ramsay is terrified of Jon Snow. But why? Is it simply because of Jon's reputation as a superb swordsman? I doubt it. Ramsay was willing to fight the Iron Born reavers in S04 with no shirt and two small knives. And yet, Ramsay not only backs down from a fight with Jon, but visibly hesitates, and seems flustered and annoyed at the challenge, quite unlike his typical cool and calm behavior. And before you say that Ramsay isn't scared, just too smart to risk his superior position in duel with someone who has more training and a valyrian steel sword... okay, you might be right, but that doesn't explain the strangest action Ramsay takes during the battle: the repeated and unprejudiced spamming of arrows into the battle line where his entire offensive strength is deployed. Ramsay isn't stupid. He's not going to just dump a bunch of friendly fire into the chaos just to speed up the elimination of a massively underequipped and outnumbered force that is going to lose anyway. No, Ramsay orders the archers to keep firing again and again because he wants to eliminate Jon, quickly, and from a distance. He is willing to sacrifice his own men to accomplish this. Lots of them, in fact. There's no doubt about it, Ramsay is scared to death of Jon Snow.

This is a man who has cheated death.. who has no fear. Jon throws himself into the bloody carnage of battle while Ramsay sits back on his horse and watches the action. For his entire life, Ramsay has been accustomed to being able to to control people through fear, intimidation, and gruesome displays of violence. How to you control a man that fears nothing, not even death? Whatever the reason, Ramsay's mask of calm slips where Jon Snow is concerned; possibly the one person in Westeros that Ramsay refuses to engage, even with a shirt on, preferring instead to backpedal and loose arrows until he finally just gets the ass whooping that has been coming to him for three seasons.

Sansa's victory DOES come at a cost: her innocence. They make a point to consider that she may still possess such a thing when her bastard brother, who has been mad with rage for the entire battle, suddenly considers that he may not want to let his sister witness him beating a man into mush, and finally calms down, perhaps planning a more proper execution or to use Ramsay as a hostage after tensions have cooled. But he doesn't know what Sansa has been through.
Ultimately, Sansa is the one to exact vengeance, with even crueler methods than Jon wished to spare her the sight of. And what does Ramsay say before his death? "You can'ts kill me... I am part of you now, forever." Sansa denies this, but smiles as she walks away from the sight of Ramsay's dogs tearing him apart.
the message here is that the old Sansa is gone and that the world has imparted into her a measure of it's cruelty, violence, and indifference. She is more a Bolton than she even knows.
