Poor Ham, all he wants is go fast, man.
>>
>10 sec pen for something that saved you the whole race
>>
>>69444483
thats why they probably did it he could've ended up fourth or even worse if the team didn't tell him
>>
>>69444544
Not true, to be honest. If they had told him that they couldn't explain what "not using 7th gear" means he would have figured out on his own that he had to short shift. Hell, he even said it himself, but was just asking for extra confirmation. The onus of this is all on his engineer telling him without hesitation.
>>
>>69444483

>likely DNF or stuck in 1 gear and finishing out of the points

vs.

>grey area rule breaking that you can argue with the stewards for hours and end up only losing like 4 points

he did pretty well

can't wait for another gearbox penalty for hungary though lmao
>>
here's to hoping Newey/RBR can make a competitive car next season so Max can challenge Hamilton for the championship

that would be ebin
>>
>>69445095

They absolutely will. Maybe not full Merc-tier but the Renault engine should be up to par next season, token system is getting scrapped, and the new cars are downforce demons and Red Bull just happen to employ le downforce god as their main designer.

Unless Newey has gone senile or Renault really drops the ball (which is unlikely now that it's directly affecting their own team as well), there is no reason to think Red Bull won't be even better next year.

Ferrari on the other hand are just choking, all those updates on the engine and all those new parts etc have seemingly not made the car better at all. Merc have barely done anything to their car and they're still destroying.
>>
>>69445095
Amx vs Vetlel vs Choco would be ebin like Kimi vs Juan vs Michael in 2003

I'd be OK with it, even if it'd mean having to see Dennis's smuggest face.

Isn't Vijay Mallya a full #yolo billionaire?

Why doesn't he just drop a few hundred million just for the team to focus on one year (e.g. 2017) with hugely expanded resources? Or just get a cheeky loan from an Indian bank, doesn't seem that hard.

What's the point of running a midfield team that has no real chance of ever winning without major luck? Better to have 1 year of championship contending/race winning car than 10 years in the midfield.
>>
>>69444483
the penalty was for telling him to shift through the gears which he would have done anyway. not for telling him about the gearbox setting, that wasn't under investigation.
>>
>>69446541

In the USA the minor leagues of baseball are A, AA, and AAA, then the majors.

The minor leagues are to bring along players, but no one cares if the teams actually win.

GP3/2 are the same way. People argue about "this driver had a better record than that driver" and shit but it doesn't matter. It's about learning to race with other cars, maybe some setup/DRS deployment, fuel savings, etc. If you're good you graduate, the actual winning percentage doesn't matter as much.
>>
>>69451627
I get wath you are saying but it's still a lot more exciting than F1 these last few races.
>>
>>69451806
Fair enough. There are people that love watching minor league baseball, too. It can be exciting.

I prefer to watch sports where everyone involved only cares about winning, so I only watch the highest level of each discipline.

Are you watching the Indycar race later, Finnfriend?
>>
Do we really deserve that the ones who are dealing for the WDC are a beta and a tryhard american nigga? The 2005-2010 period was comfy as fuck, and literally nothing happened since then.
>>
>>69452013
Nope but might give it a try
>>
>>69452392
Cool. It has Montoya and Max Chilton and it's a small oval. A lap takes 17 seconds. Chilton qualified very high (4th I believe) which is amazing.

In this discipline qualifying means very little in terms of final standings but it's p. cool.

There will be a thread. I think it starts in 1h 10 mins.

I wonder if any Finns have raced in Indycar? Something makes me want to say Mika Salo gave it a whirl.
>>
I missed the race, should I torrent and watch it anyway or was it the usual MWL borefest?

I saw Sebastian Vettel at the paddock in Silverstone today. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and waving his finger in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen World Championships in his hands without paying.

Bernie at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Seb, you need to let me rig those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear him, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When he took one of the championships and started rigging it multiple times, he stopped him and told him to rig them each individually “to prevent any teammate infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After he scanned each championship and put them in a bag and started to say greetings to Maurizio and Sergio, he kept interrupting him by going YABADABADOO really loudly.

they pretty much implemented those rules because rosberg was constantly getting told exactly what to do and how to drive
so in baku hamilton came 5th because he had a problem with his car it was stuck in the wrong mode and he couldn't get it out and he asked over the radio what he needed to do to unfuck his car and they said they couldn't tell him and they didn't (/f1/ called hamilton a nigger for not knowing how to use a computer)
now rosberg has had a problem with the car and he asked a really obvious question about it and they've answered his question instantly telling him something he should already know (that you can shift through a gear you're not supposed to use to get to the above gear or below gear)

I just don't give two shits about that stuff. I'm autistic as fuck about F1 though, so I don't care about anything Mallya-related unless it adversely affects the F1 team, at which point I'll be rooting for whatever keeps the team alive (and preferably still under Indian owners).

>>69480887
Slim. They're not gonna have any budget problems with three years' worth of 1st place WCCs, and the board will be throwing all the cash they want at them to keep up the good job, so it's pretty much guaranteed that they've been developing the 2017 car while keeping up the improvements on the 2016's.

Nah mate, Red Bull is going to win the 2017 WCC. As of Japan, Renault comes with another 20 hp upgrade slinking the power deficit from 40 to only 20 hp to mercedes. That's close enough to bridge the performance gap to the Mercs combined with the better aero. Hamilton may still win the WDC but Rosberg will probably be bullied by the Red Bulls like we have already seen this year and fall back in the points.
>>
>Max Switches to Red Bull
>already earned more points than Kvyat and Ricciardo combined
>this is only his second year in F1

How can anyone sane not believe that Ricciardo and even Hamilton, Rosberg and Vettel are gonna get BTFO when this kid gets the dominant car and more experience?

>>
>>69481269
only problem with that is that assumes no gains to Mercedes current performance, which will probably not be the case. They make upgrades too you know. That's the problem Ferrari has had. They hype up their upgrades, Canada/Spain/New Season rolls around and they're nowhere close because Mercedes solves their own problems. That's happened the past couple of season, including this once.

We'll see what happens to engine comparisons next year. I've been most surprised by the Renault engine's reliability if anything, I thought they'd still have many more technical problems this year.

As for the Vettel years comparison, I don't think its the greatest reference point. Mercedes has actually been ahead of the pack (which includes RBR) in some instances of aero in these dominant years (front and rear wings, brake ducts). That was something Ferrari never really had when they were trying to chase RBR when Vettel was winning all their championships. So while current RBR may have some aero advantage over Mercedes, I don't think its anywhere close to the advantage they had over Ferrari or McLaren in 2010-2014.

Not trying to come off sounding like a dick, because I get what you're saying, but isn't F1 -not- about winning to everyone?

I mean, sure everyone there wants to win. I'm sure everyone at the track wants WCC & WDC, but every year that's really only the goal of 2-3 guys, and only 1-2, maybe 3 teams. Everyone else in the field is more focused on either podiums, points, or just finishing the damn race lol you can just about expect/predict the general area in the field that every teams will finish in.

Meanwhile, GP2 has a much more even playing field. I know there are performance variances among different teams, but two drivers on the same team with extremely varying levels of talent can literally be in first & dead last, while those same two drivers in F1 may only be a handful of positions apart.

So baring that in mind, I believe just about every driver in the GP2 field goes into every race weekend believing that they can end up as the winner. Vs. F1 where both drivers at Manor, Renault, Haas, Sauber, & Toro Rosse know every race that they won't win. McLaren should be in that group too, but their drivers seem to truly believe McLaren will magically challenge Mercedes upon every upgrade.
>>
>>69481710

>but isn't F1 -not- about winning to everyone?

If it was then only Mercedes, Ferrari and RBR would compete

the rest are literally wastes of space in the current format
>>
>>69481710
>but their drivers seem to truly believe McLaren will magically challenge Mercedes upon every upgrade

They're waiting for next year basically. Hypothetically, Honda will get the shit together next year, and because McLaren is basically the work's Honda team, they should be able to compete with Ferrari/Merc/RBR (who are/were the works Renault team)

Hypothetically Renault's car could/should be good next year as well, but I think they're lacking in Driver talent.

He puts their struggling car in the points every race

Rosberg's only weakness is wheel-to-wheel racing, which I admit is pretty damning, but he's demonstrated he can be just as fast as Hamilton in both race and quali. Barring Silverstone, Rosberg's wins this year have been more dominant than Hamilton's, and re: quali, Hamilton is likely the best on the grid over one lap. I think he easily would out perform 3/4 of the other drivers if they were put into the second Merc against Hamilton

Also, he's generally an intelligent, dependable, consistent, and precise driver (inb4 Austria), which does count for a lot despite not being flashy traits.

He's good, but he's nowhere near as dominant as Senna and Schumacher used to be in the wet.

I'd put him as Jean Alesi-tier in the wet. Well above average but not GOAT-tier, much like Alesi was whenever it rained.
>>
>>69483733
(Rustled guy from above)
This is my main concern. Hamilton is fucking insane in the rain, Rosberg is dogshit. A couple more wet races and Lewis could walk it to the championship.
>>
>>69483571
>Rosberg's only weakness is wheel-to-wheel racing

Which is the majority of the point between teammates. If Rosberg was pitted with Vettel as a team-mate, Vettel would easily win, despite both of them being terrible at wheel to wheel. Rosberg is average in his own race, and terrible fighting other cars. He's not fast, and when conditions change, he's worse.

The only reason he is where he is, is because dumping him to gain a better driver would piss off Hamilton, and Hamilton is basically half the demographic Mercedes want to sell to. They're clearly eyeing up replacing him with Wehrlein or Bottas, if Lewis doesn't walk to the next best team.

>>
>>69483733
>>69483813

Hamilton is certainly above average in the rain but he really isn't so good its hard to comprehend. Senna and Schumi both were so exceptional in the rain that they made everyone look like a joke. Hamilton's performance in the rain recently is inflated because he's compared to Rosberg who can't drive in the rain at all, like one of the worst in the rain out of anyone on the field.

The only true post-classic era F1 rain masters are Schumi and Senna.

Verstappen is also showing quite a bit of promise in the rain (not that he needs any more hyping). Of course the Red Bull seems to be better in the wet than Merc but the fact that he was battling and considerably faster than a Mercedes at all is remarkable in itself. And it's not like Red Bull had a "wet setup" because it rained 5 minutes before the start of the race and no team was expecting it.

I don't know if Bottas and Massa are literally the worst wet drivers ever or if its just that the car is somehow just completely incapable of wet conditions for a 3rd year running.
>>
>>69484430

The fact that they're even occasionally straight up better than Ferrari should not be acceptable under any circumstances. The difference between the Ferrari and Mercedes power units really isn't that drastic anymore anyway.

Plus Force India seem to be consistently better than Williams this year as well so I think it's fair to say they are doing a great job with the resources they have.
>>
>>69484638
>The difference between the Ferrari and Mercedes power units really isn't that drastic anymore anyway.

Yes it is, you fucking faget

>Ferrari qualifying in 3rd place with +2s to Mercedes
>hurr not much difference

Foreskindia don't outperform shit. The Merc engine does.
>>
>>69484331
It actually makes alot of sense. It weighs less, and costs alot less then the CF the rest of the teams use.

And apparently the weight of the wheel makes it harder to turn or some shit, hence why Williams have the screen in the bulkhead.
>>
why is betaberg such a drybabby
>>
>>69484692
It's mainly because the Ferrari is basically a Brick. The engine is rumored to be more powerful the Merc, but the aero is more drag then downforce, so they suck in corners, and can't get as fast on the straights.

Also it seems to wreck gearboxes lel.
>>
>>69484721
Maybe he likes a loose rear and prefers to sacrifice downforce for straight line speed.
>>
>>69484794
and it can't turn on tires as well as the others

how can than the most well-funded, historically significant team with the most seasons and experience in F1 mess up like that?
>>
>>69484794
even if it's true that the engine is more powerful, it doesn't mean that's necessarily better. probably the mercedes engine is better at getting the power to the wheels, ferrari had big problems with that (especially 2014) the last couple of seasons, though it looks better this season. I believe the electrical engine side has a lot to do with that
>>
>>69484794
There's a reason they tried to buy Newey. Shouldn't have let RB outbid them. Fucking Austrian Jew.

Anyway I doubt the Ferrari is more powerful, the current Merc develops 1000hp...
>>
>>69484818
>Maybe he likes a loose rear
Seems he likes them dumpy and flat. Could be loose, depends if she lets Lewis get up in the butt.

>>69484849
Historically they suck. They had to pull in the best of the best to win the Schumi years. Ferrari as a company have been working on accidental success, and brand awareness since the start. It's literally why Lamborghini exist.
>>
>>69484525

Williams just can't seem to make a car that works in the wet. To be honest Williams struggle to make a good car anymore.
>>
>>69485048
Williams, McLaren and Ferrari should probably just exit the F1 eventually.
>>
>>69484692

The Mercedes engine is probably marginally better, but it isnt TWO SECONDS a lap better. Even the Honda isn't two seconds slower just based on the engine alone.

The point is that Ferrari have many other problems that makes them shit that isn't anything to do with the engine. Red Bull make do with a much worse engine and are now consistently beating Ferrari even with the flaws of the Renault.

Ferrari's problems off the top of my head

>can't get tires into the right working window ie cant heat them up properly
>too draggy of aero without having that much downforce
>still a shitty front end that isn't as direct as drivers want
>gearboxes

Red Bull and Mercedes look to be on rails and Ferrari is always searching for the grip even in quali. The "on rails" is exactly the type of car both Vettel and Gimi excel with, with a very pointy low end.
>>
>>69485048
I think they lost alot in the early-mid 2000's and they haven't got it back. The entire era where they had Maldonado they were just on life support. The switch to Merc PU put them back at the top end, or top of the midfield now, but I think they need to become a semi-works team now to really compete with the top end all season long.
>>
>>69484430
>>69484692
>muh PU

Stop being a butthurt little Kraut
>>
>>69485222
Perez has outperformed Betaberg at alot of the last few races in terms of driving even.
>>
>>69485048

They were so confident in the beginning of the season lol. They moved away from their straight line rocket philosophy and tried to become Merc 2.0 and just ended up with a shitty draggy car that isn't particularly good at anything.

Should have just gone with the low drag/low downforce "fuck Monaco" style of car. It seems like they retained all the negatives of that car whilst making everyhing else also worse and the top speed nowhere near as dominant.

>>69485172

Williams has been a joke for a long time. They will probably fold once Frank dies and no one has the "passion" to run a shitty team anymore because its so expensive and unrewarding. They were decent if not amazing in early 2000s but haven't been good since the JPM/Ralf era. Totally lucked into the recent results by choosing the best power unit and benefitting from the colossal failures of at least 3 teams that are on paper meant to be in front of them (Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren). Now they are just going back and McLaren will be in front of them eventually and they'll literally be Sauber tier

Basically because Webber can't start. Every time they went wheel to wheel, Webber was clearly more in control, and most of the time when Vettel overtook, he let Vettel go past. Even Horner admitted several times that Webber just let Vettel go, otherwise they would have crashed.

Webber wasn't that good, but the fact that Webber got the backup strat, and had more reliability problems, still holds a lap record or two, and was generally competing with Vettel, proves that Vettel wasn't as good as the hype suggests. What it does prove, is that the Schumi-Strategy works to market the driver and the team, and win races.

Raikkonen might have been better in his prime, perhaps. But he's not right now.

Also I'm reluctant to try and rank them because I think a driver's success depends on a few things - their talent, the car they happen to get in, their confidence, their age (younger drivers are hungrier and take more risks, but obviously are more inexperienced), the psychological battles they have with their teammates, etc.

Just like any other sport really, they find a run of form.

E.g. if you put Alonso, Hamilton, and Vettel all in the same car for a year, I wonder what would happen. Their success would depend on the personal battles between them really. But all three are very competitive drivers (even Alonso in his old age is still very competitive) so it would be great to watch. I reckon all three would win races though.

RAI in Lotus was mega. That team was basically shit, and he still put in some ridiculous drives. Monaco in 2013 was ridiculous, hence the argument he just slacks in Ferrari's.

I would say RAI, HAM and ALO are top tier, and VET is an unknown quantity. He was crap vs RIC in the RBR, and the current Ferrari is hard to quantify. Going off base logic, he was great with the NA RBR, but I'm sus that he just had the best car, and a submissive team-mate in WEB. I would say both RAI and VET's forms are equal, but for different reasons. RAI just doesn't give a fuck, VET is having trouble with the shit car, and I think, having a teething period with learning how to race in the field. He whinges and sulks alot.

I have no fucking idea what Kimi's deal is. When he says he wants to win he's not lying. He does want to win every race, but just sometimes doesn't even seem to try.

What changed between 2013 and 2014? Well the 2012-2013 cars were a lot lighter. Maybe he just excels with the type of cars he's used to driving all his career, light, high downforce etc. He seems to finally be adapting to the new formula but even then he is occasionally just nowhere. And yea he is lazier than other drivers but its not like he straight up doesn't try because what would be the point.

Maybe the technology has become so advanced and the setup so intricate that he simply doesn't naturally understand the cars anymore and his "natural talent" doesn't give him any sort of edge anymore. I can't even remember the last time I saw him drive like he used to, attacking the corners like crazy and really pushing aggressively.

It's weird because if he had retired after 2013 people would have said wow what a great comeback, really showed he could still race with the best. Had he retired in 2014 people would have used him as an example of droppping off with age until the end of time. If he retires now he would be "pretty good but not the same as the old Kimi". And with all of this, I don't think he has changed as a driver at all. He is still as good as he was at Lotus or before his first "retirement".

It'd be interesting to know what others think about his performance and why it fluctuates so much
>>
>>69487445
>he is lazier than other drivers

He's been trying to change that now. For most of his career, he didn't drive in the simulation and never did track walks, for example. Now he's doing both. After he botched the start at Monza, he practiced the start procedure like 1000 times in simulator. Maybe too little, too late.

For four year of dominance we kept hearing from his apologists 'just wait till he gets a different teammate, then he'll prove himself.' He didn't. Even now, he's barely beating an old man who's stopped trying.

I know four world championships sounds impressive, but repeating it enough doesn't excuse his consistent mediocrity.

Engineers>Drivers when it comes to determining who's a good driver.
>>
>>69488100

I do think Vettel is very good, probably one of the greats when he retires but his Red Bull days, half the field could have done what he did in that car.

He was paired against an extremely shit Webber chokelord and very clearly had the backing of the team as well. Those cars were so good from 2010 to 2013 and he almost managed to throw away the title twice.

You could throw someone like Nasr or Ericsson into those Red Bulls and even they would have come out of it with at least 1-2 titles. Similarly if Vettel never got those GOAT machine cars he would never be rated so highly by anyone and probably wouldn't be driving for Ferrari currently.

Christ, Vettel had ONE off season, so what? Lewis had a shit season as well, in 2011. Does that mean Ricciardo is better than him too?

You're right that 4 WDCs isn't the full picture when that Red Bull was so dominant but he still had to fucking win those championships and he did so, comfortably beating his teammate who was still a very good driver

And look at Ricciardo now, best driver on the grid isn't he? Oh no wait he's being beaten by an 18 year old who's only been open wheel racing for two and a bit seasons

Drivers aren't qualified. Just because they drive, doesn't mean they can objectively judge the performance of another driver. Unless they can understand the data of a driver that the pitwall gets, they're basing it off the same inaccurate variables we are.

Consider that Sky employ Damon Hill, Martin Brundle, Johnny Herbert, Anthony Davidson and Paul Di Resta, and they're all diamonds for Hamilton and Button. Are Hamilton and Button the best drivers in the field?
