Any of you ever tried designing your own F1 cars? I did and planned to make add them to a good sim and race them, but eventually forgot about them and lost my old PC with all my games

>Pic related

This was our first car, entered the 1990 season with Nelson Piquet and Olivier Panis. Renault RS2 3.5 V10 engine and Goodyear tires.

If they put some SAFERs on that banking and give it a smooth layer of asphalt, it wouldn't be that unthinkable for something like Indycar. But F1 would sadly never ever take the risk.

Damn, now I'd really like to see an Indycar race there!

Oversized engine that nullified any competitive chance of the team when ground effect was introduced and led to one of the most innovative designs ever that looked nothing like this, but still managed to win a race before getting gracefully retired among protests?
>>
>>67696514
IndyCar doesn't even use the European ovals that actually exist, so they probably won't,
>>
>>67696514

SAFERS on banking? Indycar? Are you totaly insane?

Indycar does not drive on anything past 20° on 2 mile ovals. This one is comparable (but still longer!) in length to Indianapolis. There is no width to that track, banking is at 30° progressive and uneven through the corners. Indinapolis, which is at the last end of being drivable for Indycar, is at 9°! Indy simply doesn't drive on any other 2.5 mile track, and doesn't drive on highly banked 2 milers as well.

>SAFERS on banking?
Yes? It was developed for ovals, and first implemented at Indianapolis.

The rest of your explanation is true tho. Didn't think about the extreme G-forces a modern car would have to face. Like the 2001 Indy race at Texas Speedway (banking 24°) that had to be canceled because of that..

>I never understood this either. Why did they make this a thing? Probably yet another one of those things the FIA didn't think through when they made the DRS rules.
>>67695615

its FIA choking in its own rules, regulations and politics. Just like the metal end under the car to make sparks, an artificial fix.
cars could not overtake because aero, so they 'fixed' it with drs.

just like they will fix viewer pleasure in 2017 by making the cars look more aggressive.
and probably add speakers to each car for better sound.
>>
>>67696460
>>67696514
>>67696933
If they won't race Formula or Indy Cars on it then why not GT3 cars or something like that. Or just any cars. Since the track exists it's a shame not to use it. Something historic like that should be used and kept operational for future generations.

Could Kyvat have won this weekend?

And does anyone have that comparison picture between Rosberg's defence and Hamilton's from older races? I want to tweet it at the Sky guys, they've got a bit much recently.
>>

>cars could not overtake because aero, so they 'fixed' it with drs.
Personally I don't really have a problem with DRS in those normal overtake situations. But it's the lapped-car-DRS that I find unnecessary, unfair and ridiculous.
>>
>>67695787
i started using your mum m8
>>
>>67697217
No.

What Verstappen with nothing short of near flawlesss defence. There was only one real attack in the last 20 laps. Even with the unlikely favourable strategy that max found himself in, Kyvat would have found a way to get reckless and blow it
>>
>>67697210
Because it would require actual repaving, with proper barriers, cutting of trees, safety equipment and all other such things.

I mean Monza can only just afford F1 (Maybe not even that anymore) so expecting them to essentially double their infrastructure budget is a bit ludicrous.

We are lucky they re-concreted it the other year. (I still don't get why people moaned about that. It was going fall apart if it didn't get a concrete repave)

Just noticed that Canada has the same (softest) tyre allocation as Monaco. It looked weird to me, since they are completely different tracks.

>2016 Tyre Allocations
>Australia - supersoft, soft, medium
>Bahrain - supersoft, soft, medium
>China - supersoft, soft, medium
>Russia - supersoft, soft, medium
>Spain - hard, medium, soft

OK, that's maybe the one thing they have in common, I give you that. But so are Australia and Baku (and Russia?)

Tyre wear is influenced by many things: The asphalt used to make the track, the number of high lateral G points (such as quick corners), temperature, tyre pressure, and some more I cannot think of right now.

>>
>>67698663

>>
>>67694591
what game?
>>
>>67698759
The similarity between them lies in the kind of corners they have, and the requirements this puts on the car and tyres.

The corners are short, and slow speed ones. No fast sweepers or ultra-long corners (like Spain T3) to put lateral loads on the tyres. The cars that excel at both tracks are ones with very good traction, since you have to accelerate back up from low apex speeds.
>>
>>67699248
Can you imagine, Ferrari out of nowhere with a golden livery. The anti tobacco industry would probably go apeshit. Not that they can do anything about it.

This desu. Ricky will end up getting BTFO hard. Verstappen is going to be a literal career killer. He hasn't even begun yet and he's already pretty much killed the careers of:

>Kvyat
>Sainz (without Max he would have been a very highly rated rookie with a bunch of praise and a bright future)
>Ricciardo (will be matched by Max soon and by next season getting regularly beat by him, career will be over and any Ferrari interest will fade away as he is exposed as a hack)

Of course of course quality can be wildly ranging, but there are a good amount of high quality mods luke the 91 and i1 f1 seasons, the CTDP f1 mods, the 95 indycar mod, cart factor, enduracers. In 2016 they are a bit dated in terms of textures and polygons and shading, but the physics are strong. Newer games are catching up with the number of mods though they just aren't 'proven' yet IMO

Have even more nice things today, and it's great they're in the seat and not just eye candy.

While the boobies back then were amazing, the flimsy firesuits are just scary.

Here's Lyle Barnett talking about how he wishes he'd been wearing a 15- or 20-suit when he had his horrific crash and fire at SGMP:

You know how these things go. Every bit of edge has a price.

"So, at the Beach, Snively makes his first pass of the afternoon. It's virtually smokeless and the elapsed time drops, accordingly The pits are in a flurry. As you would reckon, the belief is that Roland has taken away clutch pressure to produce the drop in time. Roland didn't even know why it had happened, at least for the moment. It wasn't until Keith returned, heard about the events and examined how the clutch had been assembled that the reasons became known. But neither he nor Roland wanted anyone else to become aware Racers are racers.

Almost immediately, T/F (and Top Gas) competitors began dropping spring pressure in their clutches. It was purely experimental. How much was enough? How much wasn't? And in the process, clutch packages quickly overheated and were short-lived. On more than one occasion, particularly during night racing, I saw white-hot clutch parts shoot high into the darkness. Cars were cut in half. Floaters and discs were thrown into spectator areas. Racers were injured or killed. By now, most knew what had been behind Snively's first smokeless run, but the genie was already out of the bottle. Clutch package experimentation was on the loose and leaving a trail of damage in its wake. The accident involving Mike Sorokin, driver for the then-popular Surfers T/F team, was the last straw."

The firesuits were less edge than just ignorance, imo. Glad things are better now - if people are willing to wear them.

Interesting you posted what you did, I had just been looking at pictures of Garlits' clutch explosion at Lions.
>>
>>67708612
Those clutch explosions were really hellish. Sorokin had his blow and it cut the car in half when he was at speed down the strip. IIRC he tried to bail at one point and a rollover killed him.

Here's Gas Ronda in 1967. The fire from a blown engine burned him so badly he never raced again. That's when firesuits really began to be taken seriously Personally, i wouldn't get in a car without every reasonable bit of protection i can get.

This is basically the Monaco-Spa-Nurburgring problem as it applies to drag racing.

The length of a strip's shutdown area is primarily a function of when the track was built.

Newer tracks like Las Vegas have plenty of room, because they were designed for today's cars and speeds. (Just like Tilke tracks constructed in the past 10 years.)

But many of the classic tracks were constructed when the top speed for any of the cars was significantly less than 200mph. This means the shutdown areas, which back then were perfectly safe, are dangerously short for cars now running ~500kph.

As populations grew the real estate around older drag strips, which were often in the middle of nowhere when they were built, got used for other things. This means that as much as NHRA wants to extend shutdown areas, there's no longer any land available at the end of the strips - it's covered with roads, houses, businesses.

Englishtown is one of those older tracks. There's no way to make the track any longer than it is. Pomona is even worse - the shutdown there is frighteningly short.

Here's the end of the track at Englishtown: http://www.bing.com/maps/default.aspx?v=2&FORM=LMLTCP&cp=40.328659~-74.352561&style=h&lvl=18&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&scene=8445591&phx=0&phy=0&phscl=1&encType=1

For a while the increases in speed were matched by increases in braking efficiency, so faster cars could run on the same length tracks because they could stop faster too.

But eventually speed outdid braking. When Scott was killed NHRA decided to reduce the distance the nitro cars run from 1,320 to 1,000 feet, to give the cars more time and distance to stop.

Whether going from 1/4 mile to 1,000 ft was a good idea is still debated today (though there's no chance of nitro racing ever returning to 1,320, the cost in parts to the teams would be too high).

I didn't know Scott very well, but I still remember the exact moment when I saw ESPN report his death.
>>
>>67710176
I would like to say that runoff areas are a result of drivers and other people pushing for more safety, not because of the higher speeds.
Cars have been really quick for a very very long time, handling and brake performance has increased, but top speed is not that hard to reach.
Just check old footage, drivers dying all the fucking time because the runoff was literally either some little dirt ramp on the side, or fucking trees.
Driver fatality in the past was huge.
So, again, it's not that safety measures increased as a result of higher speeds (because it makes no difference crashing at 80/120/300/500 km/h if the difference is only the smoothness of your bones on the tarmac), but rather because people aren't gonna take the same risks and die all the time.

I was referring only to the development of drag strips, since it was my understanding that was the question.

Safety has historically been a higher priority in NHRA than in Formula 1. The NHRA was founded specifically to allow drag racing to be conducted safely.

In Formula 1 the situation was very different. Jackie Stewart was one of the drivers who had to battle Formula 1 owners for improved safety for racers, since F1 took the naturally European view that drivers were expendable elements of the spectacle (mirroring the relationship of royalty to their subjects who were sent off to die in war).

So in drag racing safety has been mandated as much by the sanctioning body as by the racers, probably more. I agree that in Formula 1 the developments in safety were first won only by the drivers themselves demanding change.

Now that the auto manufacturer-owners want to use Formula 1 to sell their cars and use safety as a sales feature, driver safety has a monetary value and is thus being valued by the owners of the sport.

Red Bull traces it's lineage back to the Ford-backed Stewart Grand Prix team. They built a pretty good team in the late 90s from scratch. They had a few good seasons and even won a race, but struggled in the early 2000s. Ford bought all the assets and badged it Jaguar Racing. Jaguar was sold to Red Bull in a fire-sale after Ford realized that nobody actually makes money in F1.

Toro Rosso was Minardi, who were basically a better version of Manor. They gave a lot of drivers their first break in F1.
>>
Worst thing about Sky F1 is that even though Max had a historic win, they immediately cut away after the race to Anthony fucking Davidson at the SkyPad to talk about Hamilton and Rosberg's incident, which nobody by the end of the race actually cared about.

Crofty especially makes me irrationally angry. I hope that by 2020 when Sky gets exclusivity that Lewis retires and/or Crofty gets fired. Ben Edwards and DC are literally perfect and make Crofty's commentary look like an amateur doing one of those YouTube live reaction videos. Hell, even David Hobbs (who may or may not be dead, I am not sure) and Leigh Diffey are better than Crofty.

I would rather sit through 20 minutes of NBCSN commercials during a grand prix than listen to David Croft commentate a sport he knows nothing about nor has the passion to actually learn its history.

Alonso signed with Mclaren back in 2005, so evrybody knew Ron had to get rid of either Gimi or Montoya. Quite a difficult choice if you ask me. Fortunately for him, Montoya showed himself the door out, but it was all done with Gimi too. He was already advanced in talks with Ferrari, so suddendly, Ron found himself with only one drover for 2007. That's when he realized it would be the perfect opportunity to give the nigger his long waited seat. Not that he had much of a choice there though. The nigger was of course much more economic than signing an established No. 2 driver even in the short term, like Heidfeld or Barrichello.

How could this situation be worse for Kvyat?

2015
>get promoted to RBR during their worst season since 2008
>underwhelm last year
>rumors start going around the paddock that you only got the RBR seat because there was no one else to replace Vettel
>score more points than teammate but teammate still thought to be better than you

2016
>season starts with everyone talking about how good Verstappen is and how long it will take before he takes your seat
>outqualified in every race by teammate
>get into racing incident at first corner in China with driver who helped bring four constructor's and drivers' titles to your current team
>get podium in race that teammate could have won before teammate had a blown tyre while leading the grand prix
>crash four-time world champion on first lap of next race in Russia
>get demoted back to junior team while sitting on your couch watching Game of Thrones
>first race with junior team get outqualified by less-experienced teammate
>teammate at one point was in 3rd place only behind senior team's drivers
>person who replaced you at senior team goes on to win his first grand prix, becoming the youngest podium finisher and race winner in F1 history
>have to make moves on last few laps just to finish in 10th while your new teammate finishes 6th

He's lucky that Pierre Gasly isn't ready for F1 and that Red Bull doesn't seem to be interested in signing a driver from outside of the program.

The clutch letting go was what caused Jim Nicoll's famous crash at Indy, the one where it upset Snake so much he said he was quitting racing.

a babby who knew how to develop his car but still a carbabby

I have a lot of respect for pre-Ferrari Schumi (although still le traction control car) and Mika-era Schumi, but basically no real need to acknowledge his 2000's Ferrari years as something great. Great car, completely cucked 2nd driver (often for no reason, famously see Austria), almost always had the best car with no competition at all

"I remember thinking as we came up on the lights, 'I'm going to win this SOB,' then I felt the clutch slipping and thought, 'Oh, no. Here it comes.' I was just going for the parachute handle when it happened."

As seen by millions on ABC's "Wide World of Sports," Nicoll's overheated clutch disintegrated and sawed the car in two. His half went over the guardrail, and everyone was sure he'd been killed. After seeing the front half of Nicoll's car slide past him in the shutdown area, "the Snake" tearfully contemplated retiring on the spot. "Everybody still remembers seeing that on TV," Nicoll says. "I'd run into Prudhomme after that and say, 'Weren't you supposed to quit?' I woke up in the ambulance, but they never got the back door shut all the way, and when it took off, the gurney went flying out the back with me in it. I blacked out again at some point and woke up in the hospital with my ass hanging out of one of those robes that tie in the back."

Nicoll was right back at it immediately with a brand-new T-Bar chassis, and just a week later found himself racing "the Snake" again, this time somewhere in Florida. ("Whipped me again," he says.) But Nicoll's incredible success in NHRA competition was just a part of his 1970 season."

They put a Finnish autist GOAT sim racer (actual autism I think based on demeanor) into a F3 Mazda and he lapped like 4 seconds off pace and ended up vomiting on himself.

He also has no aspirations of real racing but I think that he could be close or equal to proper drivers if he had the appropriate training. I mean you can't put a nerd who sits in a chair into a car pulling several G's and expect him not to beta out.

I actually don't think the mere handling of a F1 car is THAT difficult and a simulator is proably great to get used to the speed of it all. The physicality and the constant G forces and maintaining a regular mindset throughout it all must be what is actually the more difficult part
>>

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TX1KQNciyzA
>>
>>67725753
well you said it yourself, something is wrong here. its the design and philosophy of the cars.

currently its the limit of any F1 car that decides what's going on (not to mention so much restrictions that they will not go 100% on the max)

drivers say it themselves, these cars are relatively easy to drive (when compared to..) but there is allot more going on in the cockpit then before, so they need a certain amount of brain-overcapacity which max seem to have.

but place kimi before max in the same conditions and kimi would have won, because car/track limits, not driver limits.

But still, a fit/smart/cool 18 year old (talent from any country) has the age advantage imo. if not only because wanting it more, then at least for having less desires to live hehe.

and fitness can bring or take a huge amount of laptime on a race distance, if you remain fit (like schumi did) your focus remains as well plus the brain capacity to think whilst driving.

inexperience and immaturity would be the big downfalls for such young drivers but I don't see why they would not be on top overall provided everything falls in place in a race.
>>
>>67725828
when he was 11-ish he won 49 of 50 races in Karts. the guy is special.

and sure, the higher you go in any sports, the closer the margin get, so he might not repeat all of that, but the potential is there and that's the hype.
>>
>>67725920
>I actually don't think the mere handling of a F1 car is THAT difficult and a simulator is proably great to get used to the speed of it all. The physicality and the constant G forces and maintaining a regular mindset throughout it all must be what is actually the more difficult part

That's the point. Judging by experienced drivers' comments, these cars don't seem to be nearly as physically demanding as previous cars. The race pace that they have is so slow that the constant G forces are much less.

I still give him a lot of credit, it's not like it's an easy feat to win a grand prix today. I just hoped it'd be more of a struggle. After the race he seemed like he could have driven another race distance no problem.
>>
>>67725988

The race pace of F1 is actually embarrassingly slow. Only a few seconds slower. I guess F1 will bring that up by a second or 2 when we get to Silverstone or Spa but still there shouldn't be a question about this sort of stuff.

Also Max is great and has a cool head but really his win could have been done by anyone in that car who can be able to not spill spaghetti (not Kvyat and probably not anyone Finnish for that matter)

Max is a simulator baby and you can't blame him for it. Some people are already calling for the banning of simulators but that's so counter productive and also impossible to regulate. Soon enough the codemasters F1 games and especailly iRacing are going to be better sims than the top teams were using less than a decade ago

>>
>>67726024

True. I mean who am I as an average fan to say how exhausted a driver should be after a race? But even with muh nostalgia it seems like it was much crazier back in the day. Drivers fainting after the race, drivers necks giving out at interlagos, just being completely finished physically after a race. Now Mercedes does 2-3 times a race distance in one day of testing and they EVENTUALLY replace the drivers so that they split the days because its getting a bit too tough.

there hasn't been a good Ferrari team boss since Ross Brawn.
>>
>>67726195
Exactly, I think the only reason they switched out Ham was because he was getting bored driving round and round. Some of the exhaustion shown from drivers in the past was because they simply weren't in as good of shape as drivers today, but in "the pinnacle of motorsport" you shouldn't be able to drive the car around for half a day straight and have to stop only because you're getting bored. No matter how good of shape you're in.

it's better to just go with a completely closed cockpit instead of some halfway compromise solution. The aerodynamic benefits should negate the added weight disadvantage.

The Radio Le Mans guys would always joke about how DTM/SuperGT or LMP cars are "single-seaters with roofs on them", but if the aeroscreen passes then you can't make that joke anymore.

You shouldn't let reddit tell you what to think about Bernie.
The truth is that Bernie is quite capable and the F1 you hold dear is a result of what he has done for the sport.
Now, who's at fault for the current state of the sport?
I do think that CVC (Bernie in it) fucks up way too much. But I doubt it's Bernie making those terrible calls, and more so shareholders and investors who see it in a different way than Bernie does. Bernie without CVC demands would probably give better results. If CVC stays and Bernie as a head of it resigns, nothing's gonna change because the people behind the curtains will still be calling the shots and shit.

That was the procedure back then, closing the pit lane exit until the safety car came by. There were no "delta" times in a way they're enforced today, so they wanted to prevent cars catching up to the SC for an entire lap at big speeds.

Montreal pit lane was always catching drivers out because of the way the exit is located. If i remember correctly, only times cars were black flagged in over 10 years was for jumping that red light.

Nobody is denying Max's talent. The complaint is against the sport as a whole. Max just happens to be so good that he is highlighting F1's faults so greatly.

And yes, this goes back to NIki's comments back in the day about how a monkey could drive an F1 car. But I have a hard time imagining a 17 year old, with the same talent and upbringing as Max, coming into F1 anytime before 2014 and being so successful so quickly.

Maybe I'm wrong, and maybe Max really is that much better than any other driver in history.
