I wouldn't say he was necessarily scared but he didn't want to play unless he was 100%. Under bodge, because of his record, he could just walk straight back into the team whenever he was out injured. Klopp remedied this by frustrating him(not selecting him) when he was ready to play and I think it's made him more hungry for games.
