>>64331538
A few things are wrong here
1) Bottas/Massa, Perez/Hulkenberg, Verstappen/Sainz(although it's close) and Alonso/Button are not that close in pace.
2) Ricciardo/Kvyat,and Grosjean/Gutierrez are not that far apart in pace.
3) Nasr should be miles ahead of Ericsson.
4. Aston Martin decided against the Force India deal.
5. Manor won't be that far off the pace. Their deal with Williams is deeper than you think and they'll have Grove's and Brackley's assistance on things such as fuel tanks, cooling systems, and even suspension nose designs that Manor/Marussia/Virgin have previously struggled massively with.

sorry i gotta hijack this thread temporarily, formulafags.
ive got a couple of (probably scrubby)questions thou.
how does motorsport work?
more exactly, how does all this team business work. im always readind about certain teams in formula 1 for example that employ (i guess) different drivers to drive their cars for them.
do drivers from the same team compete with each other?
what do the teams get out of the whole deal?
who supplies the cars to the drivers?
who was phone?
thank you very much in advance
>>64337352
>do drivers from the same team compete with each other?
yes
>what do the teams get out of the whole deal?
Money
>who supplies the cars to the drivers?
the teams build them
>>64337447
thank you very much, america.
so how many people usually belong to the same team?
do they compete because they get paid more if they rank higher or beause it boosts their street-cred?
do drivers get fired from their teams if theyre not good enough?
if you dont feel like answering id be happy for a link to read up on this btw, america. im helpless n dont know what to google
>>64337352
>do drivers from the same team compete with each other?
Yes there are two different championships that run in parallel. The Drivers which only one can win and the Constructors which the team wins, both count up the same points awarded to the drivers and the Constructors just takes both their drivers points and adds them together.
>what do the teams get out of the whole deal?
Money, Prestige, Sponsorship money, Money to build better cars, money
>who supplies the cars to the drivers?
The team they drive for
>who was phone?
Bernie
>>64337352
>how does motorsport work?
different series have different rules
>how does all this team business work.
a team has two drivers and hundreds of employees for everything from designing the car to being in charge of the twitter page
>do drivers from the same team compete with each other?
most of the time. there are cases of teams who have a #1 driver, who is their clearcut favourite, and a #2 driver, who they compromise the strategy and upgrade cycle of to benefit the #1 driver
>what do the teams get out of the whole deal?
success, reknown, exposure and money
>who supplies the cars to the drivers?
the teams. even in spec series where the cars are all designed and manufactured by one external company, those cars are sold to the teams who put them together and prepare them for each race
>so how many people usually belong to the same team?
driver-wise, 2 race drivers and as many reserve/test drivers as they like. the rest of the team is over 200 employees for even the smallest teams, the biggest having 600 or so.
>do they compete because they get paid more if they rank higher or beause it boosts their street-cred?
both. the team who wins the constructor's championship gets a bigger share of the prize money than the team who finishes last.
>do drivers get fired from their teams if theyre not good enough?
depends on the team. some teams fire them immediately while some keep an underperforming driver around for years.
>>64337352
Okay in most motorsports there is a drivers championship and a team championship happening at the same time.
The drivers championship ranks the drivers based on their results through the season.
The team championship ranks the teams based on the combined efforts of their drivers throughout the season.
So the drivers compete against each other while also having the secondary element of having to be teammates which can be conflicting.
The team championship is what awards the prize money but the drivers championship is what everyones cares about.
>>64337648
im happry that even guv'na joins in to answer my questions.
does it make sense for people to be fan of a team or is motorsport based more on individual people?
do cars even make a real difference anymore?
do teams sign up people based on their "style" of driving, if there is even such a thing? more precisely: are teams known for being dedicated to a certain style or is it just a name that gets associated with the drivers?
>>64337631
>so how many people usually belong to the same team?
In total? Loads if you count the whole business, engineers, office staff, pit crew. Each team has two drivers that race which is called having a "seat". Some teams have test drivers or "developmental" drivers which are like interns
>do they compete because they get paid more if they rank higher or beause it boosts their street-cred?
They get payed more if they do better
>do drivers get fired from their teams if theyre not good enough?
They are under contract and this normally covers them for the whole season, they'd need to fuck up really, really bad to be fired mid-season and I can't think of anyone off the top of my head. Mostly it's drivers wanting to move to a different team and buy out of their contracts

>>64337820
>does it make sense for people to be fan of a team or is motorsport based more on individual people?
you can be a fan of whoever you want
>do cars even make a real difference anymore?
yes. f1 in its current form is 100% decided by the cars, unless the driver is really shit. there is a massive performance gap from one to the next.
>do teams sign up people based on their "style" of driving, if there is even such a thing? more precisely: are teams known for being dedicated to a certain style or is it just a name that gets associated with the drivers?
not really. it's moreso that the teams will design the car around their #1 driver's driving style, but teams like red bull are notorious for designing the car how the chief designer wants it with no regard for driver preference.
>>64337820
>does it make sense for people to be fan of a team or is motorsport based more on individual people?
It depends how you feel.
The italians are massive of Ferrari and only Ferrari and only the drivers currently employed by Ferrari. The Italian fans are called the 'Tifosi' because of their famous support for only 1 team.
>do cars even make a real difference anymore?
Depends on the motorsport. In some series the cars are purposefully identical.
In Formula 1 the difference between cars at the moment is huge. The top ten drivers in the drivers championship finished in team order.
>do teams sign up people based on their "style" of driving, if there is even such a thing? more precisely: are teams known for being dedicated to a certain style or is it just a name that gets associated with the drivers?
Not really. The drivers will have an input in how the cars are designed and try to get them to their liking or style.
>>64337820
>does it make sense for people to be fan of a team or is motorsport based more on individual people?
Either, most of F1 is advertised as teams and some teams like Ferrari have huge fan bases. But some drivers get huge fan bases too depending on where they're from (UK, Germany, Finland, Brazil) and how successful they are
>do cars even make a real difference anymore?
It's all about the cars, drivers are just there to drive them perfectly
>do teams sign up people based on their "style" of driving, if there is even such a thing? more precisely: are teams known for being dedicated to a certain style or is it just a name that gets associated with the drivers?
Not really, drivers do have styles but they're not enough to really effect decisions on who is on what team apart from some might not want someone known for crashing

well, people, so far im really amazed by all your great replies. im used to different kind of conversations from /b/.
im asking all these questions because i kinda got into rally driving this past week after never really being into any kinds of motorsport at all.
so far im trying to educate myself on youtube but it seems its either "highlight" videos of the same turns on random tracks from a third-person view or pre-2000 recording from the drivers perspective (which i personally love).
i guess my last question, to let you all go back to your business would be:
where do i go to see more hands-on, full, HD video of that sport?
i mean im even willing to pay for it
>>64338025
>>64338064
actually, one more question if i may.
when cars are so important, if im gettin that right, and they decide whos winning at the moment, where does the competetion even hail from? wouldnt it be enough to compare the cars on paper beforehand n celebrate the winner before the race even took place?
>>64338085
>where do i go to see more hands-on, full, HD video of that sport?
hahaha
you don't
Bernie (the guy in charge of F1) has a vice grip on all video coverage. There is no online streaming at all and he's trying to force the free broadcasters to either go to pay tv or give up their contracts to a pay tv broadcaster. F1 takes down any and every youtube video they can find.
if you know how to torrent there's a full 1TB 1978 (i believe)-2014 torrent somewhere out there and the 2015 season is easily available too
>>64338085
You might have to look around a bit but Canal+ (A french broadcaster) produces some great onboard highlights of the races.
https://vimeo.com/129040906
It's not really educationally but great to watch.
but as

>>64338261
great, im really happy about you guys helping me out. i will def check these links out
>>64338198
>where does the competition even hail from?
There is not always this big a gap between cars, sometimes the cars at the front can be closer.
Teams can always fuck up in race strategy or the driver can make mistakes. Wet weather also serves as a good leveller of car performance.
But more often than not the guy on the front after qualifying wins.
There is of course some interest in inter team battles. As the two drivers at a team in theory get the same car then a battle between the two can arise.
>>64338198
>when cars are so important, if im gettin that right, and they decide whos winning at the moment, where does the competetion even hail from? wouldnt it be enough to compare the cars on paper beforehand n celebrate the winner before the race even took place?
Mostly in the belief that on paper it doesn't look like there's an obvious winner. But more importantly there would be no show which makes the money from sponsorship, tv broadcasting and crowds
>>64338492
the strategies go deeper than "go as fast as possible"?
>>64339002
Only some of the time the strategy "go as fast as possible."
A lot about F1 is Tire wear, pit stops, fuel management, less of the fuel nowadays.
>>64339066
>Prost's legs
top kek
>>64339002
oh boy this might take a while.
Okay. There is an amount of management in F1. Whether it be the car, the tyres, the engine, the fuel or even yourself. These have changed or come and gone but F1 has never been about going flatout from start to finish. There has always been something to look after to get you to the end.
At the current moment there is tyre management. So you might try and save tyre life for later in the race or to go longer on that tyre and so pitstop later to try and get the upperhand.
Now I could try and explain the rules regarding the tyres in Formula 1 but they recently updated them for next season and to be fully honest I do not understand them. Like at all.

>Now I could try and explain the rules regarding the tyres in Formula 1 but they recently updated them for next season and to be fully honest I do not understand them. Like at all.
Let me take a stab:
>Teams inform Pirelli a few months in advance which compounds (outside of the 2 recommended) they'd like at the race, and the respective ratios out of 13 (such as 5-5-3, or 5-4-3-1). There are thus more than two compounds available each weekend. Two designated by Pirelli, the rest selected by teams.
>At race weekend, Pirelli gives them these 13 sets, out of which 3 are reserved - 2 (which may or may not be different compounds, decreed by Pirelli) reserved for race, and 1 (whichever of the compounds is softest) for Q3.
>The rest of the 10 can be used in any combination for the race, provided that the two already set aside have also been used.
>So in essence, 2 sets (not necessarily different compounds) are selected by Pirelli for mandatory use, and apart from those two sets, the teams have leeway in taking as many of the rest of the compounds in whatever combination they'd like.

Nah, that title goes to either Senna (not the best driver in '88, '90 or '91, only the best in '93 when nobody would've won against the Williams anyway) or Alonso (not the best driver in any of his championship-challenging years, including his defeats).
Thinking on it, if Red Bull went from having a worse car than Toro Rosso at the start of 2015 to having the absolute best chassis in Hungary and maintaining that all the way to the end of the season (best car in Singapore, best car at COTA in the rain), does that mean Mercedes did not upgrade their chassis at all this year?

red bull were only worse than toro rosso because their front wing and nose were shite and made the car really unstable. once they redesigned those the car was once again p damn good
mercedes meanwhile were fucking around with minor front wing, monkey seat, engine cover and winglet solutions that they all brought in for one race, got rid of the next and a completely different set brought in the next which meant they had no clue which upgrades were working and which weren't i.e. mclaren pre 2015

>>64378924
Not exactly difficult when you have more to talk about regarding F1. Even without the likes of Prost, Balestre, Senna etc, the sport is far more political these days, and that suits Wobbler's manipulative nature perfectly. Alonso would have an easy time writing a lot about that as well.
That said, Mansell really should've talked more about 1990.
>>64378940
it's more than mansell went back and forward chronologically a lot.
those political machines are the manipulative ones, not webber. webber simply spoke his mind, which is anti-political and usually to his own detriment.
>>64378988
Mansell's post-F1 events are so intertwined that it's difficult to structure them chronologically. It would just end up being a disjointed mess.
>simply spoke his mind
Nah, he always hid the most important details, such as him disobeying every single multi-12 order he's been given, Turkey 2010 being a team order or the Silverstone front wing debacle being completely inconsequential (because he wasn't faster with it).

Spa 2010 now
I saw Fernando Alonso at the paddock in Monza today. I told him how honored I was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a baka and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Where is my horsepower?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “ERS? ERS? ERS?" and slapping my head. I walked away and continued with my engine work, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to leave for the motor home I saw him trying to walk out of parc ferme with like 105 grid penalties in his hands without applying them.
Charlie Whiting was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Fernando, you need to apply those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear him, but eventually turned back around and brought them to Charlie.
When Charlie took one of the penalties and started applying it multiple times, he stopped him and told him to apply them each individually “to prevent any mgu-h infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After Charlie scanned each penalty and started to say the grid position, Alonso kept interrupting him by yawning really loudly.
DC and EJ to C4?
I hope so.

>Nissan decides to not participate in 2016 WEC LMP1
>23 December, 2015 (Yokohama, Japan): Today, Nissan announced that it will withdraw its LMP1 entry from the 2016 FIA World Endurance Championship.
>Nissan entered LMP1 in the 2015 season with an innovative new, and bold concept, with the ambition to compete at the front of the field.
>The teams worked diligently to bring the vehicles up to the desired performance levels. However, the company concluded that the program would not be able to reach its ambitions and decided to focus on developing its longer term racing strategies.
>Racing is a core part of the Nissan DNA, and the company has a proud history of innovating to win. Nissan's commitment to motorsports remains strong, as evidenced by its victorious track record in the 2015 season – from achieving the overall winner of Super GT two years in a row in Japan, to winning the Blancpain Endurance Pro Class, Bathurst 12hr race with the GT-R GT3. Nissan will continue its support of WEC through its various engine programs including recent introduction of LMP3 engine.

I used to watch BBC (it's a standard channel on TV here), but since that will be ending I guess I'll have to settle for torrents of crappy Sky coverage. Flemish coverage is pay TV and is terrible! They don't even go to the tracks and the commenters are just rubbish, they usually know even less about what's going on in F1 than the average fan who goes online every now and than.
>>64400960
don't you get dutch or french coverage, jerome?
>>64400940
Nooooo!!!! What a terrible week for motorsport related news! First no more F1 coverage (for me) and now this.. It's had a good concept, even the Audi LMP this year has taken some ideas from the Nissan.
Remember the car never ran as a hybrid so had about half the fucking power of it's rivals.

It's their own bad design which led to it not having hybrid power. It is their own fault, the concept was interesting but they executed it poorly.

Because, being the champion, from a popular country and with an already sizable fanbase, he has the PR advantage over his team, as this is a very British-centric sport. It's still likely to be bullshit, but it would also not be entirely unexpected from Button.
