If hardly anyone is there (on a weekend) you can probably just climb the fence and look around, but the buildings themselves will probably be locked. Worst that happens is some groundskeeper or security person tells you to go away.
I'm pretty sure you will at least need permission and have to sign something. They don't just let any guy wander around an elementary school. The pedo fear is real.

I've done this once and I remember people doing this when I went to school. You sign in at the front desk and they give you and ID sticker that says guest and you can see some of the teachers.
