That's not really the problem so much as a distraction. Labour fundamentally has nobody who is electable inside them.
Look at elections historically and it's very easy to see who can win based on who looks more prime-ministerial, especially in context.
1974 (a and b): Heath vs Wilson - the last battle between two serious candidates. Wilson wins on what is essentially pure luck.
1979: Thatcher vs Callaghan - Callaghan is discredited before election. Thatcher wins by default.
1983: Foot vs Thatcher - Foot is a dithering joke. Thatcher wins by default.
1987: Kinnock vs Thatcher - Kinnock is a ginger joke. Thatcher wins by default
1992: Kinnock vs Major - Kinnock is still a joke. Major wins, not quite by default but he's still the more credible candidate.
1997: Blair vs Major - Major is discredited and Blair looks like responsible fresh blood. Blair wins by default.
2001: Hague vs Blair - Hague is a bit weird and nowhere near as prime-ministerial as Blair. Blair wins by default.
2005: Howard vs Blair - Michael "Did you threaten to overrule him" Howard doesn't seem like a PM either, lib-dems fail to make a breakthrough. Blair by default again.
2010: Cameron vs Brown - Brown is discredited by global financial crisis. What should've been Cameron by default actually gave Brown a chance (Lab+Lib+SNP) but he wasn't up for it.
2015: Miliband vs Cameron - Miliband was a funny looking joke. Despite close polling it's unsurprising in hindsight that he ultimately lost.
It's named the Kinnock effect. Ignoring left/right issues, just by looking at someone and judging them along those lines you can make reliable guesses as to who will win. If Labour had someone who had a good voice and looked good, it's quite possible in theory that he could articulate left-wing policy and get it the time of day. (Though Labour currently needs a Kinnock more than anything else to save it from the inside come-what-may at elections, assuming that's at all possible.)
