The mother and I both love to read, so she gave me an English copy of "The Master and Margarita." In eastern europe, you would be making everyone uncomfortable. It's not eye contact, it's using western mannerisms. The easy one to explain is smiling. Eastern europeans smile when you personally know someone or something funny happened, and the smile is always genuine. When you smile at a stranger, the implication is therefore that there is something funny about them that you're laughing at. It's insulting.
