I left Islam in 2010 at the age of 17 when I went to my mosque and my imam openly said that suicide attacks were justified and were righteous forms of jihad. The day I left, my family disowned me, I got into a fist fight with my brother, my dad called the police to evict me from the house and I was homeless for a few months until I stayed at a friend's place and got a job as a forklift operator. I am also an ex Muslim here. My family is Shia and I grew up Shia up until 13-14. I stopped practicing since i was very young and began to hate religion for good reasons. I am not an atheist but I do belive in a higher power.
I'd like to think I am a logical person and that's why I don't belive in religion. In my mind it doesn't make sense that there are three major religious groups that have mainly the same ideologies but act and believe differently. It's obvious that these religions stemmed from one another.
I also don't like the idea that my whole life is supposed to be based on the number of good boy points I acquire. There are many verses in the Quran that contradict or are illogical when it comes to these "points" or sins. Like today it is a very holy night called Layat al Qadr during Ramadan and all of our points are supposed to be multiplied thousand fold on this night and our sins can be absolved as well. Shit like this is what upset me since I was a child because it is really inconsistent and doesn't make sense. Basically I can pray super hard and do a lot of good things on this night and absolve my sins for the year so I'm good right? I could also do the same by going to Mecca.
My parents have also created a lot of strife for me in my life because of this religion, which is also another reason I refuse to believe in it. They act like they have no personal identity and only live to push gods love on me so they push and push religion on me at every waking moment. They wonder why I don't like to talk to them or even get a long with them really. Can't wait to leave this house.

Yes most definitely. A lot of religious Muslims tend to rationalize things very oddly. They will be lenient on some things such as music or dancing, etc. But will then be super strict on other things such as halal meat or drinking. This could also apply to much higher level things of course such as jihadism.
For instance my best friends family is kind of religious. In the Quran it is said that if your parents do not bless/permit your actions then God will never forgive you for doing it, even if it is a good thing like praying. So yes, if my parents say I am not allowed to pray then I must not. My friends dad is an asshole and checked out of his family like 20 years ago. He is mentally abusive but since he prays and does a lot of "good" for the community, people see him as a good person even though they KNOW of how he is with is family. It doesn't help that his dad's brother is an imam and he follows him everywhere he goes.
Basically a lot of devout Muslims are pretty illogical. While they may be strict about certain things, they will turn their backs to a lot of other stuff in their day to day. I could definitely see how someone could easily disguise violence as a former of devotion to God.
