I think the issue is cumulative. Like, yes, living in the middle of nowhere you won't get shit, but the issue is directed services for farmers, who are an important industry that needs things like the phone and internet to stay in business.
We need to keep our farms alive because international circumstances could change at any time and being able to grow our own food is pretty useful for survival.
I think the solution isn't just the NBN but the government needs to look into long-term ways to encourage farming as a whole without multinational corporations getting involved.

This thing about the country being 'a great place to live and work' has a big caveat. It's great if you've got the ability to work out there, because there's fuck all jobs in a lot of places.
Example: Science, technology and engineering (non infrastructural disciplines) - Fuck all jobs
Arts - Fuck all jobs anywhere but even less out bush
Financial industry - If you want to settle for being a low-mid level accountant in a small/medium business then yeah there's a few, and little prospects for high level or promotion
Medical - GPs yes, specialists not really
The only jobs of quantity are in farming and manual labor like mechanic or machinists etc, which is not going to get the attention of most young people living in cities looking for work, especially if they're university educated

Save the millions of dollars needed to go buy a farm, and then go and buy one.
Most farms don't employ people that aren't family/friends of the family, and if they do employ you you'll be picking onions for less than minimum wage 10 hours a day.
