French fucked up and got the Americans to deal with their mess. Who had previously considered helping the Viet Cong (with their anti colonial agenda) but decided against it because it would've weakened Franco-American relations damaging NATO (and promoting international Communism). The various Vietnamese independence movements won and then the Viet Cong then chose the second best option and allied with the Commies to help them win more of the country/rebuild. Eventually the country split in two and America got called in to deal with the Communists and the rest is pretty well known.
