>Last month, Canadian teen William Gadoury created a sensation by claiming to have discovered a lost Maya city using star maps. Experts said it was utter nonsense and quickly shrugged it off. Gadoury has now spoken to National Geographic, and it’s clear the teen is not backing down.

>To quickly recap, the 15-year-old Gadoury “discovered” the lost Maya city—which he dubbed K’aak Chi (meaning Mouth of Fire)—by correlating the locations of known settlements with the positions of the brightest stars. He received help from the Canadian Space Agency (which provided satellite images) and a remote sensing specialist from the University of New Brunswick.

>Experts say Gadoury is way off the mark. Some claim the features shown in the space-based photos are merely abandoned corn fields or possibly marijuana grow ops. What’s more, they argue that the Maya people, though good astronomers, probably did not choose to settle in areas based on the positions of the stars.

>Gadoury recently visited Washington DC, where National Geographic’s Kristin Romey had the chance to speak to him in person. Based on his responses (translated from French), it’s clear that this ambitious teen is not quite ready to back down. He’s still convinced, despite the vociferous criticism, that he’s on to something.

>The student, who’s hoping to specialize in either astronomy or archaeology, wants to publish his findings in a scientific journal so that he “can share it with archaeologists and scientists.” He’s currently talking to one journal about writing for them.

>In response to the claim that his theory has been debunked, Gadoury didn’t mince his words.

>“I think scientists are jealous,” the teen declared. “Sometimes they are scared of new ideas. They’re afraid to have their established ideas criticized.” Ultimately, Gadoury wants scientists “to have more open minds and to listen to other ideas.”

This is true though, especially when it comes to archaeology and geology, whether he is right or wrong.

His research seemed fairly robust though. Surely it would be far too much of a coincidence for all those cities to line up with a star chart.

Well as a Archeological Scientist I can't say he is wrong. A lot of my colleagues refuse to believe new claims because it would invalidate the years of work they put into it.

Graham Hancock explains this well in his books. Alot of the scientific community despises the Archeology community because when they discovet something, it can ruin (ultimately) what they spent their lives to achieve.

I hope they'll find the city.

I'm an actual archaeologist (well, I have the degree and I've worked as one -- it's not how I pay the bills these days.) The kid is wrong. I'm sorry. The Maya simply didn't build their cities in locations that corresponded with the constellations. There's no way they could have done so, because the Maya civilization was a collection of independent city-states, a lot like ancient Greece; there was no central authority that could have told people, "okay, build here." And as has been correctly reported on several sites, the Maya were extremely populous at their height -- as were many of the other Precolumbian Mesoamerican civilizations -- so if you throw a dart at a map of the Yucatan you have a decent chance of hitting an undiscovered archaeological site. The claim that "the Maya ruins all line up with the stars!" only looks like it holds water if you arbitrarily ignore all the OTHER sites scattered around, and there's a lot of them.

I actually laughed when I read the first couple articles about this guy. I'm not trying to be insulting, he's a smart kid, but it's silly stuff.

Of course, actual archaeologists are just as prone to see nonexistent patterns in things too. Did you know that Cusco is laid out in the shape of a puma? (It's not, but there are actual career archaeologists who'll claim that it is.) For a city that was actually heavily influenced by the surrounding landscape & the cosmos, read about Teotihuacan.
>>
>>76119885
So what did the guy really discover and why are the jews trying to cover it up so much?

The kid is technically correct. Ancient sights are aligned to planetary positions and this is an established and well known fact. This wouldn't be the first time someone tried to find ancient ruins by looking at the sky, but they are usually wrong. It's not a proper way to find ancient architecture.

Science is a liar sometimes.

Aristotle.
Thought to be the smartest man on the planet.
He believed that the Earth was the center of the universe, and everybody believed him, because he was so smart.
Until another smartest guy came around, Galileo, and he disproved that theory, making Aristotle and everybody else on Earth look like a bitch.
'Course, Galileo then thought comets were an optical illusion, and there was no way that the moon could cause the ocean's tides.
Everybody believed that because he was so smart.
He was also wrong, making him and everyone else on Earth look like a bitch again.
And then, best of all Sir Isaac Newton gets born, and blows everybody's nips off with his big brains.
'Course, he also thought he could turn metal into gold, and died eating mercury, making him yet another stupid bitch! Are you seeing a pattern? No.

these were all the smartest scientists on the planet.
Only problem is, they kept being wrong.
Sometimes.
>>
>>76124818
Yeah, let's spend thousands of dollars from the already limited archeology budget on an expedition just because this kid has an idea.
>>
>>76119885
>Sometimes they are scared of new ideas. They’re afraid to have their established ideas criticized.” Ultimately, Gadoury wants scientists “to have more open minds and to listen to other ideas.”
This is exactly the problem with science today.

It is however even worse in physics than science, if you even suggest that everything post Maxwell is objectively and verifiable wrong they will get very very defensive. that is until they see an gravity wave generator then they shut up and read the assigned text until they are brought up to the level of their coworkers.

NASA has never photographed that area at the same time of day or at the same angle since that one time. Every single other photo has had a different perspective or light conditions.

As soon as the replicate the original angle and light conditions I will believe what they have to say.

Actually that is a lie, I will never believe anything NASA puts out as their entire purpose is to simply be the public face of the space program with none of the budget, technology or and all of the censorship of a stalin era commissar.

That's especially silly when it comes to the pyramids at Teotihuacan. Literally, it's one pyramid at the end of a road, and two pyramids that happen to have been built on the right side.

Ironically Teotihuacan absolutely does show evidence of cosmically-inspired design -- it was clearly a planned city, it's a grid, oriented a little bit east of north, and the angles of the Pyramid of the Sun correspond pretty strikingly with the mountains nearby -- but the Orion theory is pretty fucking fringe.

That's fine and only involves a bit more work. You can work out the trig with the tilt and position of the earth to the sun for any given time. Ive had to do this to calculate when a satellite has flown over an area of interest. Its just another step.

He can extrapolate this idea to the solar systems general position in the Orion Arm, then calculate earths position if that much resolution is needed for predicting which stars were present and the pattern they made from an observer. Like you mentioned if any significant stars have burned out, then the pattern of the ruins will be that much harder to make out. Though, this is why he needs to ground truth.

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn7915-most-scientific-papers-are-probably-wrong.html

Most published scientific research papers are wrong, according to a new analysis. Assuming that the new paper is itself correct, problems with experimental and statistical methods mean that there is less than a 50% chance that the results of any randomly chosen scientific paper are true.

John Ioannidis, an epidemiologist at the University of Ioannina School of Medicine in Greece, says that small sample sizes, poor study design, researcher bias, and selective reporting and other problems combine to make most research findings false. But even large, well-designed studies are not always right, meaning that scientists and the public have to be wary of reported findings.

"We should accept that most research findings will be refuted. Some will be replicated and validated. The replication process is more important than the first discovery," Ioannidis says.

Surprisingly, Ioannidis says another predictor of false findings is if a field is "hot", with many teams feeling pressure to beat the others to statistically significant findings.

"When I read the literature, I'm not reading it to find proof like a textbook. I'm reading to get ideas. So even if something is wrong with the paper, if they have the kernel of a novel idea, that's something to think about," he says.

tl:dr
You do not take research at face value without further verification because it's probably wrong.
It's ongoing serious problem with the peer review process among others.

This is just like that nigger who claims he discovered and named Chronic Encephalopathy Disease or whatever.

Every real scientist called him out, and he basically just threw temper tantrums at every interview saying he was being smeared by the NFL (who are guilty of down-playing the risks of brain damage) and that others were jealous, when chronic encephalopathy has been named and documented in boxers since the late 19th century.

This child, this Quebecois jewlet, thinks he knows more about an ancient civilization in another country just by looking at Google Earth than dozens of people who have dedicated their lives to studying this shit?

Nothing to do with mathematics I'm afraid.

We live in a complex world with too much information to process, so we need trusted information which gives a brief summary.

>Archaeocryptography is not a recognized branch of archeology or of any other academic discipline. It is an example of pseudoscience or pseudoarchaeology that employs contrived calculations involving many free parameters to achieve an impressive-looking result

(1) Wikipedia is corrupt and often biased, they could be trying to suppress Munck and his work

(2) It's nonsense

I'll watch all 2 hours of it because I'm bored, but there is very little chance it's not complete rubbish. Intelligent people often get caught up in stupid things and they trick and convince themselves that they are on to something.

Fringe theories tend to stay fringe for a reason, because they are often wrong or incomplete and useless in a practical sense. This also makes them incredibly entertaining and interesting, because it lets your imagination run wild with aliens and lost civilizations and all sorts of fun fantasies. The real world is often much stranger than you can imagine, it would be uncomfortable to actually learn certain things, aliens, god, supernatural creatures, alternative medicine, reincarnation, these are comfortable to think about, because they make the unknown less dangerous and unpredictable.

If you are convinced there is a world wide conspiracy to crash the financial markets and start WW3 and bring about world government, you feel a lot more comfy than if you were to believe that nobody is in control, and chaos could break out at any minute.
>>
>>76128930
OK, yes, granted, that did happen. That's really not what I mean, though -- I'm talking about amateurs pursuing their own research that led to major discoveries, not people (or donkeys) literally tripping over artifacts or features and then turning over all the actual work to trained archaeologists. Sorry, I didn't make that clear.

The philosophical underpinning of contemporary social justice is far older than that, anon. John Rawls wrote A Theory of Justice in what, 1976? And even then it was just an evolution of the Cultural Marxism promulgated by the Frankfurt school, itself a communist reactionary movement against Leninism.

Quite clearly they're examples of scientists not doing what you claim (which, I will note, you have yet to provide any evidence of).

I show what "scientists" actually do (i.e. lie about their findings, and force ludicrous social wedge issues into places they don't belong based on radical left ideological supremacy in science). >That's pretty much the antithesis of his beliefs, he says all the bullshit 'ancient alien theorists' point to can more easily and logically be explained by a decently advanced human civilization that existed during the last ice age.

Yeah man, ancient aliens are for dummies, hyperboreans and atlantis on the other hand is 100% real.

I study archaeology and I have to agree. There are a lot of people making progress in research with a wider range of techniques and collaboration with other fields, but there are also a lot of established academics doubting and trying to discredit people that do better work than them. This is especially true if someone is essentially proving years of their research incorrect or outdated.

Not saying this kid isn't a smug turd anyway, he was already likely beaten to the discovery in 2009.

Think about the best places for cities nowadays, near coastlines and rivers. When the ice age was in full swing, there was a huge amount of exposed land globally. The best lands for that time period are now under the ocean for the most part. In fact there are a number of anomalous ruins underwater, though a lot of the time these are dismissed using geological explanations, some of which are sound, and others which seem much less likely

You should read his books if you're interested in the theory. He lays it out pretty well.

Underworld is probably the best place to start.

So in other words, real geologists have shown them to be natural but the crypto-historian-faggots refuse and wanna believe in their la-la land fantasy? Color me shocked...

On coasts that dried up in the ice age, and became ocean again at the end of it.

There almost definitely wasn't anything into the bronze or iron age technologies, but I could imagine some temporary sedentary settlements using wood and bones as materials being settled along the coasts. I think that we would be finding evidence now if that were the case though.

Early humans were smarter than they are given credit for, and there is continually more evidence showing that to be true... but as far as I know there is no evidence of advanced civilization that early. Closest thing to it is some obscure stone spear points that potentially push a specific hunting culture back by thousands of years.
>>
>>76119885
Seems like a pretty easy claim to verify or debunk. Just have someone go out there and see if there is or is not in fact a fucking ancient city?

I fail to see how a salt crystal hippies pertains to my point. I'm not talking about ancient aliens, I'm talking about things like using paleobotanists to analyze plant remains/spores in deeper layers of soil to see what kinds of things people in an area were farming.

>>76120505
They should do that in theory, but a lot of science is way too dogmatic for that.
If a new idea questions held beliefs these ideas will be ignored, while a lot of scientific consensus boils down to "X must be true because we think y is true"
