>>
>>75757818
I am guessing they mean how well it compresses. A lower information rate would compress better.

Then again, a rate is information per something.

Is this per word? per syllable? per what?

If I were measuring I'd go for per syllable, but who knows what they did. Per word measurement would make languages with lots of long words more information dense.

Also information rate wouldn't be the only game in town. Redundancy means you can tease out the intended meaning if some parts were unheard, or even purposely omitted.

If you can figure out what is being said from context, then you can depend on implied context and actually say less.

This sort of thing might mess with measured information rate depending on methodology.

English is the most spoken language because the US spread it to the civilized world after they became a superpower post-WW2 (which also happened to be the moment mass media started to exist)

>>
>>75759093
I just looked it up. The cases are gone and masculine and feminine seem to be merged. I don't see any difference in the declensions or adjective inflections in the standard version of the language. There is a flexible word order in English.

I understand that because your language is imprecise and vague that you might more be able to express yourself properly in a language as intricate and beautiful as the English language but there's no reason to be so hostile. If only you could fully understand the breadth and depth of this wonder of linguistics, the supreme amalgamation of Germanic and Romantic languages. The agendered simplicity. The flexibility. Every minute and unique facet demonstrates the infinite complexity of the human mind. You really don't know what you're missing.
>>
>>75759372
It does. If you've studied Latin or any Slavic language or most languages with explicit case marking, English is loaded down with restrictions and requires complicated gymnastics with prepositions and obscure gapping rules to reorder the constituents of a sentence.

He's not saying you can't strain the limits of the rules, but it's much more awkward than many languages (Hungarian probably included).

Yet even a master of the English language like Shakespeare wished to be a native German speaker to give his plays more depth. Hell, there's even this one weird Korean philosopher who publishes all of his works in German since according to him that's the only language enabling him to thoroughly and unmistakably explain his theoretical constructs.

I know you think you're talking about the laguage itself, but it sounds like you're describing your own difficulties with it as though they're features of the language. Speakers of all languages will use incomplete sentences to save time, and every language has a limited amount of sounds. Japanese might have a smaller range of possible sounds than other languages, and it might be spoken faster (more syllables in a given period of time, though the overall time it takes to convey information is about the same), but that doesn't make it especially difficult to speak or understand compared to languages with a wider range of sounds.

Ukrainian is same as russian from ergonomic perspective, neither better or worse.Ukrainian has similar words to both russian and polish.Ukrainian can understand 95% of what russian says and 70% of what polish says. Its a topic of debate, in my opinion russian is brotherly language, not mother tongue. Both russian and ukrainian nations didn't exist back then, and both of these languages originate from old slavic. The difference is just that russians and ukrainians interacted with different cultures as well as some local speech always exists, so languages separated to stand-alone languages right now.Natural process.

jews used these languages for the everyday needs, but they always read the Bible and studied the Torah (which is written in Hebrew).

They considered Hebrew as a holy language and it was forbidden to speak it for other purposes.

I thought one of the primary advantages of English was that users tend to just make up new words for things at a more rapid pace compared to other languages, which tend to combine pre-existing words first then make a new word if the combination becomes overused.

The faster rate of updating words lets you more accurately convey up-to-date information easier.

Flip-side of that is you get fucking retarded shit like 'duckface' added tot he lexicon at a faster rate too.

They are very similar they both have syllables comprised of 2 letters always a constant vowel, in polish certain groups of letters combine together to form a single sound such as cz - e. They both use horonofics though in polish the name itsself is changed.
Polish word for legs: nogami
Japanese romanji for god : gami
Looking at any polish word you cansee the same two letter syllables comprising words as in japanese, the exception is when there is a stand alone vowel witha long sound in jap like o in owari, the same exception holds in polish.

Probably comes from having subtitles on while watching movies and series. Some language studies actually have made the claim that countries like Funland where people speak better english than in Germany, the reason lies in that Finns have subtitles while Gercucks have dubbed their media. It makes sense, if you hear english being spoken you can adjust your own words to their correct form.

There's actually kind of a funny thing about that. The most common words in English all come from a Germanic background, but in total most words are actually of a French or Latin background. The thing is, most of these words are either effectively synonyms of Germanic words, or rarely used.

For example, "pretty" is Germanic in origin, while beautiful, ravishing, gorgeous, and so on all have Latin/French roots. The general rule is that French/Latin words are more eloquent or technical, while Germanic words are more mundane.
>>

Also Japanese is only bad for personal communication because of their cultural norms. You can say something as briefly as in English if you want, but their culture makes it so that they beat around the bush a lot while English is way more blunt and direct. Because those cultural norms don't really apply in a new language (since they don't have enough mastery over it to really appreciate all the nuances and talk as if they were talking in Japanese) it seems as it the new language is more straightforward.
If their language wasnt efficient they would be using English for business and industry and they don't. Same with Chinese.

Our complex web of noun genders has been more effective than the Great Wall of China in keeping foreigners at the fringes of our society.

English has a vast vocabulary and the spelling is difficult. But spelling is really "artifical" problem. If there was some central authority governing language like you have for many languages, spelling could be easily fixed.
Like in Serbo-Croatian for example, every sound is one letter, you read how it's written.

Yet you let in all those mudslimes, Merkel has gone downhill. Ich hoffe dass, sie storben werden.

English has been watered down, it used to be as complex as German centuries ago.

I find words easier to pronounce when I use a British accent.

Am I the only one?

How are you defining informative?

English is the best language on the planet for specificity because we depend jack shit on context.

You need to mean something and we don't have a word for it yet? Just slap a bunch of prefixes and suffixes on a word we do have and if necessary steal a word from some other language. Worst case scenario you can hyphenate that bitch.

That's how we end up with words like schadenfreude.

As for complexity, most of our complexity comes from a complete lack of consistency in writing or speaking English with the exception of word order, and even that's a bit fungible for some shit, especially if you involve commas.

We don't have tones, or gendering, or certain sounds like double rs, and we use an alphabet instead of logographic characters so we aren't the terrible tier, but the complete lack of consistent pronunciation is a bit of a bitch.

>gender shit

oh man

I thought german was hard for me (my language has the same gender thing in it), but I can't imagine coming from a language without those and trying to learn them.

That is what makes it hard, luckily all my professors are fluent in the language they teach. My german professor last semester, lived in Munster for 8 years. I think with this day in age everyone should atleast attempt to learn a second language.
