This morning a woman in my class expressed her anger at being targeted by the sexual assaults that have been occurring around campus. Our professor - a well-known scholar - took it upon herself to explain that as "free, empowered American women" we should fight back, we should notify the proper authorities, and we should get this institution behind us. She proceeded to tell us anecdotes from her own life about times she had "slapped hands away," as evidence for the fact that we free empowered women are responsible for our self-defense when confronted with assault.
I fucking had it out with her. She spent the next ten minutes trying to explain to me that I had misunderstood. But when I said that she was putting the blame on victims of sexual assault and ignoring the fact that patriarchy is embedded in the institutions she's telling us to petition, she said, "I'm not saying the structures aren't there, but you can resist! We celebrate resistance in the Third World. Don't you want to be free?"
So. many. things.
Don't fucking fetishize the resistance into which we are forced. Don't celebrate our resilience as a way of ignoring the systematic production and protection of violence. That's exactly what this University does, on so many levels. They'll give us a a day for empowering women, a night for condemning sexual assault, a week of cultural resistance, but they won't - and they will never - give us relief from the institutional reproduction of the violences that drive us into those spaces.
I cannot "be free" by choosing to act in the defense of my body and self when I am embedded in a school, in a state, in multiple societies wherein my experience of life is extracurricular. Don't tell me to petition these institutions that both regularize my dehumanization and capitalize on the conversion of my experiences into nominal diversity.
