Robots can easily sort through all sorts of objects. They can even make a cocktail. The difficult thing will be animals. Stuff like deer crossing. Because it has to recognize the deer first, which is possible to do, but it also has to stop in time. There are also difficulties that it doesn't stop when it sees a garbage bag flying in the wind. Sure there are business accounts that don't like to use USPS but eventually it will be integrated with fedex/ups/dhl down the line. Even then USPS has been struggling and probably will look into automation too. The way I see it, USPS will simplify mailing with those huge boxes like those for gated communities. You will eventually see more and more of them. People will be forced to drive out a few blocks to get their mail or if they live in the boonies, they will have to drive into town to one of those boxes. Meaning they can cut more and more jobs. Then eventually they have something automated to connect to those boxes and it sorts them right into the correct box slots.

Most of the trucking schools in the northeast don't even train manual anymore, or if they do it's a side-thing they don't really go hard on but only the basic understanding. They know that most OTR companies are rocking fleets of automatics, and the only people driving manuals still are owner-operators.

The irony is that it was only an intermediate step to this full automation, which is inevitable. You haven't given any proof that can be ascertained that such a task is impossible for a robot to do just because a 9 star truck driver can't do it. Been working warehouse a long time. Easy way is those portable rollers which they use to load trucks. Easily use the same ones to unload trucks, people throw boxes on there, push the boxes --- assembly line style people outside the trucks take boxes and stack like item numbered boxes onto pallets. Once pallet is full, wrap it with plastic a bit and move to storage area with pallet jack/forklift.
There's no machine that can do this. You have to sort the items before you put them away. I guess there are machines that sort mail so there could be a machine that sorts boxes by scanning them then push them onto certain pallets but that's expensive as hell and only really big companies will afford that for the time being.
