They're made for using your imagination, so probably much too complicated for millennial kids.
I remember playing with these with my brother. One year we both got a tub of Greens along with other assorted presents for our birthdays (there was a 2 for 1 deal on them when parents bought them), so what we ended up doing was cracking open two paint buckets and painting their helmets team colors (I was Blue, he was Yellow).
From there, we made two "fortresses" in our back yard, called Fort Raptor (I had seen the Jurassic Park movies recently and thought raptors were cool shit) and Fort Somerset (brother was really into the Battletech cartoon at the time). The Forts were really just mountains of dirt about waist height on opposite sides of the back yard, but we went the whole nine yards, turning them into fortified mountains with roads, "wire" fences made out of fishing line, buildings made out of scrap wood and spare bits of cloth mom let us use from her sewing room, trenches, moats, etc.
We even used other toys to outfit our forts. Since I was Fort Raptor, I got to use dinosaur mounts and shit; since my brother was Fort Somerset, he got to use transformers and robots. Every day we'd either have mock battles or add more to our forts; things continued like this for about a year.

Then one day our aunt brought our shithead cousins over and they destroyed both Fort Raptor and Fort Somerset with the garden hose when we were out at a friend's house. When we asked what the fuck had happened she just looked at us and smiled when she said "Oh, they got bored, so I let them play with your toys!". We ended up cornering them and kicking the shit out of them for it, but after that we kinda lost the initiative to keep building.
I do not know how many men, robots and dinosaurs died that fateful day, but the terrible Titans forever destroyed both Fort Somerset and Fort Raptor. We never found some of our toys and soldiers, so either they were buried and sank in the mud or our cousins stole them.

It's no surprise this "generation social media" is broken, they're exactly like the children of happies. My dad bought me hundreds of army men when I was a kid but he also explained to me how it works. The sniper units, artillery/mortar, AT guns, armored cars, etc., so I knew what I was doing when playing with them.
They fought dinosaurs, aliens, transformers and even the Hulk. The army men are an unmatched force, winning every single battle. I have no idea how many greens sacrificed their lives defending pic related.

I had quite a few colours. Dark green was american, light green was british, grey was german, tan was japanese and brown was russian.
I still have some laying around somewhere.
