Those homes were probably constructed in the '30s and '40s. Average home size back then was pretty small for most. During the '50s the 1500+sqft home became much more common.

you can find those 1 story homes for as low as around 30-50k in remote parts of the country. They may need a lot of work, though. You will be isolated from big cities, but that's what you want innit?
