The situation could be different in Poland, but in the commonwealth nations your countries heraldry authority has to appoint your arms to you. America has no heraldry authority which means in theory no American has arms, unless their ancestors were from a non Anglo country where family arms does exist. I know of one example where an American was appointed arms by a foreign government, JFK was given them by the Irish government but I doubt any Americans posting here had that honour.

I have two ancestral coats of arms, one from Germany (Prussia actually) and one from Scotland (an extant clan that fought for independence and has a castle ruin). To the best of my knowledge I am 1/4 Pict 1/8 Anglo-Saxon 1/8 Finn 1/4 Germanic 1/4 Czech, but definitely with Roman admixture in the anglo and possibly pict and germanic, probable viking admixture in the pict, and possible mongol admixture in the slav.

The Scottish system might be different, I don't know the exact procedure for using the crest of your family or clan. I don't think there's anything wrong with using your father or grandfathers arms or crest, just don't call it yours. It's good to remember your families history and it's roots.

Let me tell about polish coats of arms. There are coats of arms used by many families, like mine is used by 500 other families, but those families, could have their own variatons of the original coat of arms, that's why there are many arms similiar to each other for one name. Mine is Dołęga (just google it if you want) and the another type of Dołęga made by someone in my family in the past. It's red and has an eagle on top of it. I don't know how it is in your countries, so I'm sorry if I said something dumb about your arms.
