why is the drinking age in the US 21?
what legal drinking age is best for a country to run smoothly?
>>

>why is the drinking age in the US 21?
Cars are much more deeply ingrained in US culture, since everything's so spread out. The higher drinking age is supposed to deter teens from driving drunk.

Does it work? Statistically, yes. I'd be interested to see a comparison of how many people per year get their stomach pumped in Europe vs the US, though
>>
>>71957965
No drinking age.
>>
>>71957965
Because the federal government subverted the 10th amendment and threatened to pull highway funding unless the states made 21yo drinking age laws.
>>
>>71958126
>Does it work? Statistically, yes.

Says who? Who are you comparing to? US road deaths are higher than most western countries.
>>
prohibition was a bad idea because it led to crime and irresponsible behavior, bootlegging, etc.
can the same be said for banning underage drinking? how about drugs?
when does it become worthwhile to ban and punish behaviors in society?
>>
>>71958427
Compared to before the drinking age was increased, DUI-related deaths and injuries have fallen per capita. Part of this, but not all, is likely because cars are now much safer than they were.
>>
>>71958427
Drunk driving incidents went down in states as they changed their drinking age. Since not all states changed at the same time, other variables were able to be eliminated.

Question that should be asked: when self driving cars become common, will the age go back to 18?
>>
>>71958427
>US road deaths are higher than most western countries.

That's what happens when people drive more.

A eurocuck going 25mph down his shitty gravel road isn't going to die, and he's probably not going to die on a bus.

Someone in the US and canada going highway speeds when a moose wanders out onto the highway has a much higher chance of dying from that.
>>
>>71957965
Because drinking in bars is unbearable when teenagers are present.

it use to be 18, but it got changed in 1985 because some girl drunk drove as an alcohol and her mother complained to congress to get the drinking age raised
>women ruin everything
i don't know what the drinking age should be but 21 is too damn high, I feel like a fucking degenerate having to go into the crack neighborhoods to find someone with a fake id and pay $20 for a 6 pack of natural light
>>
>>71958638
>>71958535

Oh silly me. I assumed the drinking age was always 21
>>
>>71959271
nah, we weren't always fucking retarded when it came to alcohol
>>
>>71958427
When they raised the drinking age, teen drunk driving deaths dropped
>>
>>71958323
Threatened to pull 10% of their funding.
>>
>>71958664
We Finns don't go 25MPHs on our gravel roads
>>
>>71959683
kimi is the coolest f1 driver ever... literally and figuratively
>>
>>71958323

The federal government using its own discretionary spending as leverage isn't violating the 10th amendment you fucking idiot.
>>
>>71959271
> I assumed the drinking age was always 21
I actually turned legal 3 separate times. Age was raised from 18 to 19 right after my 18th birthday, then to 21 shortly after.
>>
>>71957965
Because evangelical christfags, teetotalers and puritans.

18 is reasonable since you can die in the military, but for some reason you can't drink?

You shouldn't drink to get drunk, anything past the buzz is a waste.
>>
>be me
>be 16-19
>buy alcohol from my older friends every day
>complete drunken party animal every weekend
>constantly on the move to get more alcohol
>moved to germany at age 19 to study
>beer is legal at age 16 and hard alcohol at 18
>suddenly my thirst for alcohol is gone
>haven't touched a drop in months
Has this happened to anyone else? As soon as it became legal I didn't give a shit anymore. I'm 100% sure that if I was still in America I would be drinking until the day I turn 21 and then stop.
>>
>>71958126
It doesn't work at all man. It just leads to a culture of underage kids being more sneaky with alcohol and binge drinking whenever they get the chance. They'd rather take the chance with driving than risk getting caught by their parents or missing out on the night.
>>
>>71961832
That and white American women are the epitome of no-fun allowed.
>>
>>71958126
Nah I dont have the source, but teen driving deaths are linked more to inexperience than drinking

It was literally women's fault again. This is where MADD came from. And just like in the 1920's they made it worse because kids now will drink away from people who know better.

tl;dr: women fuck up alcohol again.
>>
>wanting to drink the liquid Jew

All hard liquor should be banned, and the age to drink alcohol should be increased to 25 years old.
>>
>>71960857
Weren't you grandfathered in then?
>>
>>71961836
>legal age to drink here is 18
>been driking ever since im old enough.

no,it didnt happened to me,but again,i have no friends so theres that.

My urge to get drunk dropped as soon as I got to college and alcohol was widely available. My cousin owned a liquor store so it was pretty much the same as being legal. My taste in alcohol rose however; and I went from drinking half a bottle of shitty rum when I partied to having a few expensive beers.I drink about 3 times a week, but haven't been truly drunk in almost a year.
>>
>>71958832
Just ask your parents/older siblings/college upperclassmen.

Alcohol isn't that special, really, there are better things to do with your time and money. I just use it as a social lubricant.
>>
>>71962260
No. When the laws changed, we had to wait for the next milestone birthday to be legal again. In my case it was pretty inconsequential. I was from a rural area where minors were served in quite a few bars and carryouts anyway.
>>
>>71958197
This. No one should drink alcohol at any age. All drugs are degenerate (and yes, alcohol is a drug). Druggies deserve to OD.
>>
>>71962528
Fuck off filthy degenerate.
>>
>>71964312
>>71964397
lol fag.
>>
I turn 21 in 7 hours, so when I go out to that bar at midnight and get myself a drink I will officially no longer care that 21 is a bullshit drinking age.
>>
>>71957965
21 is fine. We have enough stupid teenagers in this country without making it legal for them to drink.
>>
>>71964460
"Power hour" is illegal in most states. Call ahead to make sure you can do it.
>>
If you want to get technical, many states don't prohibit consumption of alcohol under 21, especially on private property. Nearly all states have exemptions (i.e. religious ones like taking Communion).

21 is the age to *purchase*. Still dumb, but a lot of people seem to get the two mixed up.
>>
>>71964460
nah man...it still sucks because right now you're like a little kid in the bar.....if you were in canada or mexico or europe or anywhere else, you'd have a bunch of hot 18 year old girls to hit on instead of being ignored by used up old girls at the bar.
>>
>>71957965
>why is the drinking age in the US 21?
It is a mistake. US drinking age should be at least 35 .
>>
>>71961836

This is actually a good point. When alcohol is hard to get and/or isn't available very often, you're way more likely to get shitfaced and end up #btfo. After the novelty has worn off, it's a lot less fun to get drunk off your ass.

I was in your cunt for half a year and the only trashy drunks I ever saw were either 16 year old sluts or straight-up alcoholics.
>>
>>71957965
Well in regards to the latter question, if the parenting & society of the country isn't fucked there doesn't need to be a drinking age and if such is fucked then country will be fucked regardless of 'the legal drinking age.'
>>
The later you can lrt teenagers drink the better. 17 year olds pass for 18 easily but don't really pass for 21.

Since everyone acts like a teenager until 35 they should probably make the legal drinking age 37
>>
americans are raise to be irresponsible fuckwits therefore they should not be made responsible for what chemicals go in their bodies until they are in their twenties.
>>
>>71958430
>can the same be said for banning underage drinking? how about drugs?
Obviously. They should all be legal.

>when does it become worthwhile to ban and punish behaviors in society?
When they involve actions that harm someone else's person.
>>
>>71957965
It should be raised to 30 in all honesty.
>>
>>71957965

That beer, called Famosa here in the States, is ok tier
>>
>>71964848
and russia needs prohibition
>>
>>71965955
maybe for asians who can't handle alcohol
>>
>>71957965

The drinking age is 21 for a variety of reasons such as more cars on roads in America, more binge drinking in general as part of the culture (I've had friends visit Europe and they were looked down on for getting very drunk), and of course the state looking for any possible reason to have their enforcers fine you out the ass for something everybody does anyway (underage drinking).

It's a symptom of a culture in decline paired with corrupt policing for shit nobody cared about before
>>
ridiculous drinking age desu, 18 over here although there were efforts to get it raised but failed.

Scotland had a ridiculous drinking culture though similar to all of the U.K
